Title: Implicit Understanding
Author: Aravis Tarkheena
Fandom: Gundam Wing, Full Metal Panic crossover
Pairing: Heero/Sousuke
Rating: PG-ish
Words: 687
Author’s notes: This was written for twins_randomity’s request in fic_on_demand. I bastardized a description of chyldea’s fanart of Heero and Sousuke. This ended up far more serious than I had originally intended, and probably MUCH more serious than twins_randomity wanted, but this is how things worked out.

Implicit Understanding

“Would you at least give me a reason why you won’t go out to the bar with me tonight?” Duo asked with no small amount of exasperation, his pace quickening so he could get ahead of Heero as they walked down the main hallway of the Preventers HQ on L2. Duo stepped deliberately in front of a vaguely annoyed Heero and turned to face him, walking backwards down the busy hallway as harried young agents scurried to get out of his way.

“Every time I go out to bars strangers hit on me.”

Duo rolled his eyes and opened his mouth as if to speak, but Heero spoke over him.

“And every time I go out to a bar with you, you and strangers hit on me. So I’d rather avoid the whole thing altogether.”

They’d arrived at the front desk of the building, the reception area almost blindingly well lit from the large windows that surrounded the area on all sides. At this point, Heero was somewhat grateful Maxwell was in front of him to cast a shadow and keep the worst of the sun out of his eyes.

“Getting hit on is part of the process, what’s so bad about going out and having a little fun?” Duo asked guilelessly.

Heero reflected on Duo’s definition of “having a little fun” as he tossed his visitor’s pass into the basket on the front desk. The receptionist smiled at him brightly with heavily lipsticked lips, and he nodded at her in return.

“Your idea of having a little fun, and my idea of having a little fun are vastly different things.” Heero countered as he walked out the heavy glass doors and turned in the direction in which his car was parked.

Duo jogged to catch up with his quickened pace.

“Heero, please, I never see you anymore now that you’ve moved to Earth. The two of us don’t exactly get a lot of time off. Maybe we could just hang together, just the two of us, tonight.”

They came to a stop in front of Heero’s rental, and Heero turned to face Duo as the other man continued talking.

“It’ll be just like old times. We’ll hang out at my place, watch a couple movies, eat some pizza and spend some time on the couch.”

Duo’s expression turned from knowing to slightly confused as Heero reached into his back pocket and extracted his wallet. He took out a beat up photograph and handed it to Duo.

Glancing down at the picture in his hand, Duo discovered it was an image of Heero in the arms of another man, about the same height and age, their foreheads rested against each other, and both seemed completely at ease. What struck Duo the most, however, was the warmth in the eyes of both men.

Duo glanced up into Heero’s serious blue eyes.

“His name is Sousuke, we met on a project when I first moved to Earth." Heero glanced back down at the picture held tightly in Duo’s fingers. After a brief pause Heero continued, eyes never straying the image of himself and his lover.

“I’ve never met someone who I understand, or who understands me as well as he does. It’s like he’s part of me. His implicit understanding of who I am and how I feel is the most beautiful thing I’ve ever experienced.” Heero’s tone had shifted to one of near reverence.

Finally glancing up from the photo in his friend’s hand, Heero looked into Duo’s eyes.

“We’re engaged.” Heero said in a quiet voice.

Duo could say nothing. He was stunned and stood paralyzed as Heero slipped the photo from his nerveless fingers and carefully returned it to it’s place in his wallet. Duo's lips still wouldn’t move as he watched Heero slide into his car and fasten his seatbelt. His tongue was still lying lifeless in his mouth as Heero’s hand rose in a silent wave goodbye.

It wasn’t until Heero’s car was almost invisible behind the cloud of dust in it’s wake that Duo was able to speak.

“I’m happy for you, man.”
