[Fic] "Learning" (The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe; Lucy/Tumnus; for lady_lefaye)

June 7...

For lady_lefaye's Narnia request here.

I didn't read ariyanaforever's fic for this challenge yet just in case I would be influenced by it, so I hope they're not too similar. Mine's a bit sad... This is based more on the movie than the books, though it fits with book canon (as far as I remember after over 25 years...).

Fandom: The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe
Pairing: Lucy/Tumnus (older Lucy)
Rating: G
Word Count: 512

Learning

School was one of the worst things Lucy had to endure after Narnia. Hours of sitting confined in a desk, wondering when it would end. Wondering, more importantly, if she would ever go back to her real home.

Sometimes she just wanted to shout, "But I know so much more than this! And it's more important than maths!"

But despite her mischievousness people thought she was a good girl, so she kept her eyes on her paper even if her mind was far away.

The hardest memories of all were of Tumnus. Other memories could sometimes be buried; she could pretend to explain them away as a story that had become too real to her. Battles and ruling a country were fairy tale stuff, after all. But the times she spent with him reminded her that she had been a woman who had loved someone, and though those stories might also be common she had not read them in any of her books.

She hadn't seen him as often as she would have liked, and that was especially painful now that she feared she would never see him again. The afternoon that they admitted things were changing stuck in her mind especially.

Lucy had knelt beside his chair and put her head in his lap. She had done this many times, and though she had grown older and taller she had never felt awkward about it. He was running his fingers through her hair gently and humming some ancient song, when suddenly he spoke.

"It's probably not such a good thing for you to be doing these things anymore, Lucy," he had said gently.

"Doing what things?" she had murmured sleepily.

"Visiting me alone like this. You're a young woman now."

She was about to say that no one could possibly think they were anything more than friends, when she realized that that was a lie. Whether anyone else could think it or not, Lucy already realized that she needed Tumnus, needed his touch and the look in his eyes as he spoke to her.

She had not raised her head, had merely said, "But I love you."

He had continued to stroke her hair, but she knew he understood what she meant.

"Is it worth it, to love someone like me?"

Lucy had sat up then, and he had held her as she kissed him gently.

He looked sad even then, though he has assured her that he was happy. She had realized only later that he had known that someday she would leave Narnia altogether. And when it did happen, she did not even have a chance to say good-bye.

And now she sat in an English school, with memories of banquets and songs and a faun who meant more to her than anything. She tried to be a normal girl, to do what everyone else did, because she knew that only in Narnia could she be her true self. For the most part, she succeeded in fooling people. But she could never bear for anyone to touch her hair.
