This is a-freaking-mazing. You packed a novel into a ficlet! :) I love it. It's perfect how he catalogues his friends, his regrets, and in the process we understand the tangled webs of his affection, his loyalties, his guilt. (The part about Wash made me gasp - poor Simon! Poor Wash! And how well Simon knows Zoe.) It's so touching that he wanted to be with Kaylee to prove he wasn't for her, and that it's Inara who says he needs to tell Mal so that he hears. Nice, subtle, thoughtful. Your descriptions of his suffering are beautifully wrenching. Even when he's trying to live a bit longer, it's for someone else. Gah, I want to say more, but I've just got to go reread this baby a few more times and savor it.
Thank you. So much!!!

(Oh no, I'm starting on a rant X_X Actually, if you're hungering for fic relating to the BDM... I'm working on a series of stories for a claim I've made that'll work on "fixing" some things and continue on its own merry AU way. =p here's the link. Pimpin' is fun...)

My favorite part is: “Simon! Hold on. He didn’t hear you. You have to tell him, he needs to hear,” she pleaded.
For some reason, the idea of Inara coaching him on to tell Mal is just...even more impacting and meaningful. I don't entirely know why even, but I love it. It's not even clear if she wants Simon to say it for Simon's sake, so he can complete that mission, or for Mal's sake, because she knows something about Mal that Simon doesn't and she knows he wants to hear it... That mystique is part of what makes it so good ( ... )

I'm so glad that you enjoyed it and that you really got caught up in it. Inara is a tough cookie to crack, I think... and her relationship with Simon is even more difficult to pinpoint. But I want to like her, so I struggle to fit her into my OTP M/S equation. Well, I hope any other drabbles I do for Firefly this month gets as intriguing responses as this one has!
