Booster

Cameron sat at the table, her eyes half closed. Fingers snapped in front of her face and she nearly fell out of her chair.

"I don't suppose you've considered sleeping sometime this week," said House.

"Eventually," she muttered.

House set a Styrofoam cup in front of Cameron and sat opposite her.

"Drink that. Cuddy's wrong," he said.

Cameron ignored the cup. "How do you know she's wrong?"

"She's just panicking over another damn lawsuit. A tetanus shot did not kill that kid, and as soon as she lets me do the autopsy we'll find out what did."

"I'm the one who gave him the booster shot," Cameron said.

"And he never had a reaction to one before. His mother reads too many websites. She should stick to porn like I do."

"House, you can't blame this on the internet! I gave her kid a shot and now he's dead."

"Fine, you're a child murderer. Happy now?"

She glared. "I'm not in the mood for this today."

"I'll bet I'm not the first man you've said that to. Now drink."

Cameron stared at the cup but did not pick it up. She needed something more comforting than coffee.

"I saw his mother when they brought him in. He was already dead, and she was hysterical," she said.

"Women get like that. You're a better doctor than this, Cameron. Even you know better than to try to save the world."

"What do you mean, even me?"

"I mean that I can hear your heart bleeding from over here," replied House.

He stood up. "Well, I've had my whining quota for the evening, now I'm going home. Drink that, and go home too."

Cameron protested. "Don't order me around. And I don't feel like coffee."

"It's not coffee."

She took a sip. It was hot chocolate, and not the nasty stuff from the cafeteria either.

"How did you know that I like--"

But she saw only House's retreating back as he dragged himself out the door.
