Merle yipped petulantly and scratched at the door. "Luna," Hermione muttered, "let the dog out, will you?"
There was no answer. Hermione squinted, and reached over to shake Luna awake. Her hand hit empty air. She opened her eyes fully, then, and looked at the clock sitting on her end table. God. Four thirty. Where was Luna? She rolled out of bed, wincing when her feet hit the cold floor. She shuffled around, looking for her slippers, then gave it up as a lost cause. She did pause to throw a robe on.
She staggered down the hall, Merle nipping at her feet. She opened the back door for the dog and saw Luna sitting at the kitchen table, books and parchment spread out in front of her, right where she'd left her four hours ago.
Luna had fallen asleep with the candle burning again. Hermione sighed, and blew the light out. It was an old argument; even though Hermione had set up a system of automatic lights, Luna still insisted on a candle, saying she couldn't work with the harsh, magical light. Hermione shook her wife, rather harder than was needed. "Luna," she said. "Get up."
Luna stirred, and raised her head slightly. She blinked, groggy. "What?" she asked.
Hermione licked her finger and wiped off the smudge of ink on Luna's cheek. "I think you'll be more comfortable in bed," she said. "Come on, it's quite late."
"'s due tomorrow," Luna said, then yawned. "I've got to..." she yawned, again, "...finish this up before morning."
"Luna," Hermione said patiently, "it already is morning."
Luna looked out the window and blinked, taking in the gray, pre-dawn light. "Ah," she said. "Well, damn."
"Come on," Hermione said again. "Up we go. There's a good girl." She helped Luna to her feet and guided her down the hall. "Your fingers are like ice," she said, and rubbed them between her hands, trying to get them warm. Getting Luna into bed took some coordination, and they stumbled about the cluttered room before reaching their destination. Luna kept swaying tiredly, and Hermione was half-supporting her, and half trying to make sure she didn't step on an errant clothespin.
Luna allowed herself to be guided onto the bed before her eyes snapped open. "I've got to finish th' paper," she slurred, and made a half-hearted attempt to get out of bed.
"It'll be there when you wake up," Hermione said, and pushed her back down. It didn't take much coaxing before Luna settled into the pillow and allowed Hermione to tuck the covers around her. "There, dear," she said, and gave her a quick kiss on the forehead.
Luna's arm shot out, faster than Hermione would have thought her capable off. Luna cupped her hand around the back of Hermione's neck, and brought her down for a slow, sweet kiss. "Love you," she said softly.
Hermione smiled, then realized her toes were freezing. She crawled onto the other side of the bed. Luna's legs were already invading her space, and she pushed at them with her cold feet. "Shove over," she muttered. Luna grumbled a bit, and moved her legs. "Sleep good," Hermione whispered. "Nox."
The lights went out, and Hermione tried to ignore Merle's annoyed barking.
