written for a request made by: nemkess
Fandom: Demon Diary
Pairing/characters: Eclipse, Erutis, Chris and a glimpse of Raenef V.
Warnings/notes: Third time's the charm, I guess. Heh. Of all three birthday-ficlets, I enjoyed writing this one most. I couldn't tell you why, really, but ... I hope it shows in a good way.

Warnings/notes: Raenef V, Eclipse, Chris, Erutis, slightly silly, snippet, ooc?

Disclaimer: I don't own Demon Diary.

"Everyone has the right to have fun on his birthday, and if *you* try to stop me surprising Raenef with something nice, I'll smite you!" Chris declared bravely, from behind Erutis, who attempted to move to a more comfortable position than in between a powerful demon and the object of his wrath.

Eclipse sighed, counted to ten, glared at Chris, who immediately retreated to his 'safe' place -as if Eclipse would really mind getting rid of *two* annoying humans at the same time, instead of just one- and decided that it was time for drastic measures.

He'd tried to be reasonable; when Chris and Erutis had told him they needed to discuss something very important, preferably without Raenef knowing about it, he'd agreed. (That had been his first mistake, really: to assume these two would ever have something of importance to tell him.) Next, he hadn't killed them, when they'd revealed that this thing was Raenef's upcoming birthday -and how could it be that they possessed such intimate and personal knowledge about his master, while Eclipse knew nothing of the sort? (Anyway, that had been his second mistake; he should *at least* have chased them out of the room at that point.)

Currently, their 'discussion' had lasted for almost an hour, with Chris passionately defending what he called 'Raenef's rights' (the audacity! As if Eclipse wasn't dedicated to Raenef's well-being and happiness more than anyone!), Eclipse refusing to lower himself to Chris' level by shouting and instead glaring and answering Chris' demands with ominous, eloquent silences, and Erutis nervously trying to convince both of them to 'calm down'.

Eclipse was sick and tired of putting up with this.

The time for talking had long passed.

"Fine," he declared coldly. "There actually have been several demon lords who celebrated days that had a certain significance to them, so I suppose we might simply follow their examples."

It was time for diplomacy, now, Eclipse's least favorite way to defeat his enemies, notwithstanding the fact that he was quite good at using it, as these human fools would soon discover.

Chris shot back into the seat he'd originally occupied, looking so smug that Eclipse would have wanted to hit him, if he hadn't usually felt that desire when he was around Chris. Erutis gaped at him for a few seconds, until she apparently realized that she wasn't here to imitate a drowning fish and closed her mouth.

"All right!" Chris crowed. "I knew you'd give in! Admit it; I'm scary when I get angry."

Eclipse regretfully refrained from glaring at him again, instead turning to Erutis with a smile that appeared to make her a little nervous.

"Acceptable ways for demon lords to 'celebrate' days of a personal importance to them include, among others, the burning of villages, the causing of floods and hailstorms, the razing of cities and the poisoning of rivers. Did your plans for Master Raenef's birthday include any of these in particular, or hadn't you contemplated the specifics yet?"

Erutis coughed and managed an "Uh."

Chris, predictably, managed quite a bit more than that. "We're going to get him a cake. And decorate the castle. And give him lots of presents."

"Acceptable gifts for demon lords - " Eclipse began, rather surprised to find that he was starting to enjoy himself just a little bit. (Besides, it could never hurt to recite the traditional rules some more.)

"I don't really want to receive the heads of my enemies in baskets. Or in jars," Raenef commented shyly, standing in the door-opening and appearing to be uncertain whether or not to enter the room. "Besides, I don't think I *have* any enemies."

"Of course you have enemies, Master Raenef!" Eclipse declared quickly, before Chris could say anything. "You're a demon lord, after all."

Raenef looked unhappy. "But I don't *feel* like a demon lord! And I'd really, really like to get a birthday-party with cake."

"And presents," Chris added. "And decorations."

Eclipse frowned, determinedly and emphatically ignoring Chris. Unfortunately, this meant he had to focus on Raenef. Raenef, whose eyes were shining with unshed tears that might be released at any moment now, unless ...

"I suppose just once wouldn't hurt," Eclipse groaned.

Chris had the bad sense to cheer at that. Erutis, fortunately for Chris, had the *good* sense to shut him up. Raenef beamed -and that, Eclipse told himself, was the most important. (Well, a triumphant smirk and sneer might have been more appropriate, but that would have been too much to ask for.)

A/N: Well, there were *plans* for a birthday surprise, right? I hope that counts, too. ^^;
