When Maverick looks at Goose, he sees everything he always thought a man should be. Everything a father should be, everything a husband should be, everything a soldier should be. But the one thing he wants from Goose he can never have. Because if he gets that, then Goose wouldn’t be Goose anymore.
All Maverick wants is for Goose to close his arms around him and hold him tight. For Goose to press his lips to kiss and kiss him until he can forget everything. But he knows that can never happen. Because Goose really is the perfect father and husband. And even if it did happen, Maverick knows that everything would change. Because if Goose did anything to change the way he is, Maverick doesn’t know if he could feel this way anymore. By now, Maverick doesn’t know whether he’s in love with Goose the person, or just the idea of Goose as a person. The idea he’s built up in his head. But it doesn’t really matter anymore. Because either of them is unattainable.
So he smiles when Carol says they need to find him a woman, and laughs when Goose nudges him about the string of girls he sneaks back to their room. Because for all of Goose’s feigned bravado, he thinks Goose knows all to well. But because he’s Goose, he never lets on he knows.
