Kalas was a good man. It didn't matter that he only had one wing; Lyude himself had no wings and he didn't think he was a terrible person so why should he think that there was anything wrong with someone who had only one? He'd known many bad people in his life as a citizen of the Empire, perhaps more bad than good, and so he'd been able recognize it almost as soon as he'd met Kalas. He was good. He couldn't believe that he'd been mistaken about that.
There had to be some reason behind his actions, something true explanation behind the madness he'd shown. Feigned, Lyude knew it must be feigned. He would never just betray them all like that, not unless he had some plan that would make his actions understandable to them once they learned the truth of it. He was a good man, he was their leader, and everything couldn't possibly be the way it seemed.
He held onto that belief as he shivered in the cell he'd been thrown into, waiting to learn what his fate would be. Everything would turn out well. Kalas would find some way to set them all free, even if his plan, whatever it was, demanded that he not yet let anyone know that he was the one behind their escape, and eventually they would learn just what he was trying to do and all join him again. He would apologize, and explain anything which was still unclear, and it would all make perfect sense.
Because Kalas was a good man.
