The children are sleeping. Downstairs, in the kitchen, Merriman sits alone. He half-expects to hear them moving about, to perhaps see Barney come padding down the stairs, barefoot, looking for an adult. He wouldn't blame him: if he were any ordinary man, he would be scared by the events sweeping all around them.
But he lives to stir those events, so he's not.
The only edge of fear is for the safety of the children. He's gone upstairs to check on them three times tonight: to see Jane, on her stomach with her face pressed into the pillow, sleeping dreamlessly, and Simon, sprawled all over the place, twitching in his dreams, and Barney, curled up like a little cat, lost deep in some dream of being a knight.
He promised they'd be safe. And so they will be.
