“So, I have some vacation time coming up,” Ryo said.
Dee looked up from the report he was pretending to write. “Yeah? Hey, look, I know you may not trust me after the last vacation we took, but I know a kick-ass bed and breakfast up in--”
“Actually, I want to take Bikky and Carol on a family vacation to California . Carol wants to see the ocean, and I think Bikky just wants to see Carol in a bikini, but…”
“Oh, okay,” Dee tried not to let his disappointment show. A family vacation. To the ocean. Well, he couldn’t expect Ryo to stay attached to his hip, much as he wanted to keep him there, and he’d known from the start that Ryo’s little custom-made family would always take precedence. “I’ll miss you like hell,” Dee said, “but have fun. Or as much fun as you can have with the monkey around. Maybe I can come over tonight and say goodbye?” And he waggled his eyebrows in case Ryo missed what ‘saying goodbye’ would entail.
“ Dee .” Ryo sounded exasperated, which was nothing new, but Dee couldn’t figure out what he’d one to put that tone there. He thought he was being very mature. “I want you to come along.”
“But…” Dee couldn’t stop a stupid grin from spreading across his face. “Oh. OK. Yeah.”
Ryo broke his ‘no PDA at work’ rule and put his hand on Dee ’s cheek. “Don’t you know by now that you’re family?” he asked.
And then Dee had to kiss him, ignoring Ryo’s rules and his squeak of indignation.
He was going to see the ocean, and Ryo considered him family. Nothing could ruin his good mood.
*~*~*
“I’m going to kill you,” Dee said conversationally. “I just thought I should let you know.”
Ryo snickered.
“Seriously, dude, he’s drooling on my shoulder.” And Bikky was, arms thrown across Dee with no respect for seat boundaries.
Ryo shrugged and turned back around. Carol elbowed him as she turned over in her sleep, proving that Dee wasn’t the only one with a difficult seatmate.
“The things I do for love,” Dee muttered.
Ryo got the warm feeling in his belly that he always got when Dee said that he loved him, even in jest. “We’re landing in fifteen minutes. I think you can handle it.”
Dee reached ahead and ran his hand across the back of Ryo’s neck. Ryo shivered, and reached back to swipe at his hand. “Dee,” he hissed.
“We’ve got our own room, yeah?”
“Excuse me?”
“Oh, c’mon, the kids are asleep. And if you think you’ve managed to keep the fact that we’re screwing from them...dude, they’ve come in when we’re naked in the same bed. More than once.”
“Well, yeah...”
“And then there’s all the times Bikky’s barged in when we were in the middle of--”
“You’ve made your point, Dee,” Ryo said. “Look, I’m kind of uncomfortable about Bikky and Carol sharing a room.”
“Oh my God.” Dee’s voice dripped with disbelief. “Okay, one, you know Carol won’t share a room with me under threat of death, and I’m sure as fuck not sharing with Bikky. And two, you are seriously deranged if you don’t think those two haven’t been fu--”
“Shut up, Dee!” Ryo exclaimed. He could feel the tips of his ears burn.
“I just want something to look forward to,” Dee said, voice coy, and he ran another finger across the back of his neck.
Ryo grabbed Dee’s hand and licked it. Then he pushed it away.
“Holy fuck.” Dee sounded awestruck, and Ryo grinned.
“There you go. Something to look forward to.”
Dee was thankfully quiet until the plane touched down.
*~*~*
The next day started early. Carol wanted to go shopping and Bikky went with her, and Dee and Ryo took the rental car across the Golden Gate Bridge. They hiked up to a nice spot Ryo had found in a guidebook, where Dee could watch the waves pour over the rocks and cliffs, and Ryo could watch the San Francisco skyline, and ships coming in under the bridge.
Dee had abandoned the benches for a large rock, and Ryo sat next to him. Dee slung and easy arm around his shoulders and just breathed.
“It’s beautiful,” he said after several minutes.
Ryo smiled. “I’m glad you like it.”
“Thank you,” Dee said. He leaned over and kissed Ryo, right on the mouth, in front of all the people milling around. Ryo squeaked, but didn’t push him away. “I have the best boyfriend ever.”
“Well, no,” Ryo said. He was blushing a little. “Maybe second best.” Dee looked confused, and Ryo grinned. “That would be you, dummy,” he said, and pushed Dee’s nose.
“I am wonderful,” Dee agreed. Than he shivered. “I think Bikky’s dreams of seeing Carol in that bikini are going to be seriously thrashed.”
“Poor kid,” Ryo said absently. He linked his fingers with Dee’s.
“Hey, Ryo?”
“Hmmm?”
“When do we have to meet Carol and Bikky at the resteraunt?”
“Five-thirty.”
Dee made a big show of checking his watch, even though he knew they had hours. Hell, they had hours to get back to the hotel, screw around, and then take that long walk on the beach he’d been dreaming of with Ryo. “Well then,” he said, and stood up, extending his hand to his partner.
“You done already?” Ryo asked.
“Baby, I haven’t even gotten started.”
*~*~*
At dinner, Bikky “accidently” dropped his soup on Dee, and Dee bitched about it for the rest of the night. When they got back to the hotel, Carol sat on their bed and showed off all of their purchases, while Bikky tried to simultaneously sit between Dee and Ryo and Dee and Carol. When Dee figured that out, he spent the rest of the evening doing what he could to make Bikky shuffle around, until the kid finally put a sneaker in his face. Ryo rolled his eyes like a belabored parent.
But when Bikky and Carol left, finally, and Dee and Ryo had the room to themselves, Dee pushed Ryo back on the bed and showed him how grateful he was. Twice.
