Sam almost always cooked for the Fellowship. He liked cooking, and he did not trust these strange folks to procure a decent meal for Mr Frodo anyway. No one knew better about food than a Hobbit.
As dusk gathered, Gandalf suggested they stop for the day. Soon the group was settled in a grove, and Sam got his pans out, digging into the supplies bag to see what would they have for dinner.
Merry and Pippin crouched around once they saw him started the fire. Sam made a mental note to guard the cooking meal from the pair. He noticed Frodo perking up as the aroma rose; Sam smiled to himself - some things did not change.
When Sam had the food hot and ready, he looked up to find a few more people hovering around. Gimli seemed as eager as the younger hobbits, rubbing his rough hands together as Sam gave the ham a final flip. Gandalf was sitting nearby, eyeing the pot as he smoked his pipe. Boromir appeared to be arranging his pack, but Sam caught him sneaking glances this way several times. Sam had to block Pippin's reaching hands before he could search for the last two members of the Fellowship.
Strider came back just as Sam was dishing out the food, cradling a full waterskin. He grinned at the sight of the company getting their servings, and quickly joined them around the fire. Legolas emerged right when Sam started to look for him, accepting his plate with murmured thanks.
Sam scooped himself some potatoes, and sat back to enjoy his food. The camp was warm and peaceful. It was a good night.
