Oh, Ugly Betty. I watched the first episode as soon as it came out and thought, "Hey, this could be a great show, what a pity the fandom is so small." After about five eps I threw myself into something else, and a few days ago I came back only to find I was several months behind and suddenly fics were popping up everywhere.

This story is a short one, but it's true to the characters and packs a punch. Daniel is still finding his feet in the fashion world, and Wilhemina dispenses some advice in simple terms. Her words are surprisingly relevent, and Daniel is faced with a truth he'd never considered.

If I could write drabbles like this, I would die a happy woman. This fic gets all the humour, fashion elements and wonderful characters in the show and manages to mix everything together, creating a nice little window into Daniel's life. Wilhemina's lecture is so very her, and the last line makes my inner fangirl melt. Great writing and a lovely diversion, perfectly in tune with the show.

Preview: “Daniel, fashion is about aspirations. No - about desire.” Wilhelmina unfolds her hands, as though cradling a crystal ball in front of her. “What do we want? What we can’t have. The easy, the approachable - that’s never desirable. Mode is about showing people what they can never possibly have.” Her dreamy tone sharpens. “And, of course, an only slightly less expensive alternative that they can buy from one of our advertisers.”

“That’s not true,” Daniel protests. “Desire is instinctive. Natural. Malleable.”

“So naïve,” Marc clucks.
