Title: Given Up
Author/ess: yahtzee63
Series: The X-Files, crossover with X-Men
Length: 3090 words, oneshot.
Character/pairing: Mulder/Scully, X-Men ensemble.
Rating/warnings: Set two years after the end of X-Files and spoilers for X-2. Everything before that is fair game. Rated PG-13, or perhaps M. (I'm bad at rating things).
Summary: Crossover with "The X-Files," in which an encounter with Xavier makes Scully doubt the most important decision she's ever made.

It's strange to me how easily I've slipped in to reading crossovers - this time last year you wouldn't catch me touching them with a fifty-foot pole. I still don't think I'll ever seek them out, but when they're just presented to me and written with such care and skill as this one is, it's a crime not to read and make sure everyone else gives it a look as well.

Scully and Mulder are living together in New York, achieving anonymity and trying very hard to go on with their lives. Scandal is rocking the world; every newspaper is talking about mutants and this prompts Mulder to link them to colonisation. Scully has other concerns but reluctantly agrees to accompany him to see someone who might know something about it - a Professor Charles Xavier...

This fic is just sublime. The Scully-voice is achingly perfect, with her thoughts lingering on William and second-guessing her decision. The interplay with the mutants, especially the scene at the end with Kurt, is just spot-on and I'm racking my brain to think if anything in this story was out of place. The two worlds came together seamlessly, with everyone beautifully in character - Mulder's somewhat tempered obsessiveness returning after time away, Xavier's wisdom, Logan's brashness - they're all fantastic. I could go on all night about how remarkable the writing is, or you could just read it. I know which one I'd choose.

Preview: The door is answered by a young woman whose only eccentricities seem to be white streaks in her hair and long gloves in the heat of June. She has a drawl, which Scully finds comforting for some odd reason. Inside the mansion, it's cool and clean; it smells of wood polish and floor wax, and the kids who hurry past always nod politely. Apparently Xavier has decided that this school is to be A Model, and he's done a good job of it. Scully, always soothed by order, finds herself relaxing and even gives Mulder a smile before they enter Xavier's office.

That comfort dissipates within minutes.

"There is, of course, life on other worlds," Xavier says between sips of tea, as calmly as he would talk about the weather. He is polished, even dapper in his blue jacket and pale-gold waistcoat. "I am aware of -- other presences. Their motives are as varied as our own."

Our own -- he classes himself with humans, though Scully suspects that's for her benefit, not his.
