[Alias] [Jack, Irina, ensemble] The Thought That Counts

Dec 23, 2006 23:06

…Uh, you might not see any recs from me in the next week (I’m sorry I don’t understand why I’ve been on so many trips this year despite not liking traveling -_-), so Dex will cover for me should I not appear. Sorry again. And happy (politically correct) holidays to everyone :D

Title: The Thought That Counts
Author/ess: yahtzee63
Series: Alias
Length: approx. 7,114 words, one shot
Character/pairing: Jack, Irina, Vaughn, Dixon, Marshall, mentions of Sydney
Rating/warnings: PG-13, spoilers up through 3x01 The Two
Summary: Jack makes it through his first Christmas without Sydney, despite the imperfection of gifts, both received and given.

It’s been ages since I’ve watched Alias, really. I have the last season sitting in front of the TV, waiting. I watched it ever since I was a kid and loved it and then just dropped a season somewhere when the show seemed to start dragging. But the original premise was good, and I loved the twists and the characters most of all. It took a while for Jack to grow on me, but eventually he did. And there’s a lot of great Jack-centric fic out there.

Besides, what better way to kick off the holiday season than with a dark holiday fic? And good fic to boot. Jack’s voice is absolutely spot-on in this one, the way he muses and doesn’t muse and is simply him. The scenes between him and Irina are juxtaposed against his memories of their marriage to great effect, especially with the now untrusting relationship between them as they both pour out their feelings to each other (or appear to, at the very least). Everyone is just so in-character (especially Marshall and Dixon) that it’s great, and Sydney really permeates the fic despite the fact that she’s never there along with the sense of emptiness that comes with that. Great dark stuff, so go and read.

Preview:
He'd heard rumors about Vaughn's degeneration, but this was the first time Jack had witnessed how far it had gone. "Do you have any idea what you look like?"

Vaughn shrugged. "Like an unhappy guy. That's me. Unhappy guy. Not you, though. You go on like you always did. You can pretend you don't care. But I can't."

Jack didn't feel compelled to apologize to Vaughn for his personal grieving process. "You should go to your office and sit down. I can call a cab for you."

"You know what?" Vaughn leaned in close. Jack grimaced slightly at the smell of the whiskey. "You -- you kinda have -- weird ears."

Time to call the cab, Jack decided.
