Title: Fairground Ride
Pairing: Kate/Claire
Word Count: 250
Rating: PG
A/N: For day four of the Lost Riffs, 'Carnival'.
Summary: Kissing Kate is like a rollercoaster.

The rush of adrenaline that hits her is like the slow, rumbling seconds when a rollercoaster takes off, when the fear starts to build in the pit of your stomach as you think about what's coming next - and Claire was always a wimp at fairgrounds. So when Kate is close enough that she can feel her shuddering breath and see the raindrops that roll down her skin, Claire feels her heart start to thud manically. She could count every freckle, if she could only focus.

And when Kate first kisses her, a hesitant brush of her lips that could almost be accidental, that's like the ride taking off - Claire's up in the air with the certainty that the frail forces holding her there could fall apart at any moment. Her heart continues to hammer and hammer and hammer too hard for her to keep up with. If she wasn't moaning and clinging to Kate desperately, she thinks she might have started to scream. Her fingers touch Kate's skin like she's not sure she's allowed to. It feels hot, burning up compared to the island's rainstorm. Claire fumbles, moving too fast, and Kate pulls her lips away. "It's okay, Claire," she whispers with a smile. "I promise."

Kate's smile- Well, that's definitely the end of the ride, Claire thinks. That's the part when everything slows down and you step off on wobbly legs, perfectly aware of your own mortality. Kate's smile is the part that finally lets her feel safe again.
