Summary: Hardison gets hurt on a job and Eliot won't leave his side.
They're used to acting alone, relying on themselves and nobody else. Safer that way. If you don't trust anyone then you can't be betrayed. And all that's different now. Changed. They're part of a team, and everyone tells Eliot that's supposed to mean something - but here he is, sitting by a hospital bed and waiting. Worried. This never would've happened when he worked alone. There'd never been anyone to worry about but himself.
One by one, they come to visit.
"He'll be fine," Sophie tells him, resting her hand on his shoulder.
"The doctors say he'll wake up soon," Nate promises.
"God," Parker says, wrinkling her nose. "Look how puffy his face is."
One by one, he sends them away.
On the third day of waiting, Hardison's hand in his twitches. It's barely any movement at all, but Eliot's reflexes are sharpened through years of training. His eyes snap up to Hardison's face, studying him intently. The cuts and bruises, still healing, make him want to wince and look away. Hardison's supposed to be their tech guy, damn it - their geek. What the fuck had Nate been thinking, throwing him into danger like that?
Slowly, so slow it makes Eliot feel like he's imagining it, Hardison's eyes blink open. "Am I alive?" is the first thing he says, before groaning unhappily.
And Eliot smiles, so relieved he could scream or cry or something, and his grip on Hardison's hand tightens more than it should. "Yeah," he confirms, barely able to form any words at all. "You're alive. Don't fucking do that to me again."
He raises Hardison's hand to his mouth and kisses the back of his knuckles, because Hardison's lips are split and his face is bruised and Eliot won't hurt him any more than he already is. He closes his eyes to soak up the rushing feeling of relief. He knows that he needs to call a nurse through here soon but he's not sure if he'd up for leaving Hardison's side yet; somewhere along the long road of their relationship he's grown incapable of functioning without Hardison by his side. The pair of them are a team within a team - and Eliot sure as hell is not going to let anything like this happen to his partner again.
