Summary: "He's shivering when she opens her bedroom door."

He's shivering when she opens her bedroom door. It's not cold outside, no snow on the pavements, but something's wrong. Very wrong.

"Mitchell?" Annie asks.

He shakes his head, like there's something he needs to say but it won't come out. He looks young, boyish, even though she knows that's far from the case - and even though she knows that he really doesn't need her to protect him, there's something about him right now that makes her want to try. "Can I come in?" he asks after clearing his throat.

She backs out of the doorway and goes to sit in her seat again. It's large and comfortable and it makes her feel safe. If she budged up to the side then Mitchell could probably sit there beside her, but instead he settles cat-like on the floor by her feet. His head plops to the side and rests on her thigh. After a moment or two to think about it, Annie reaches down to thread her hand through his hair. She can touch him, just like she was able to kiss him accidentally. His hair is soft beneath her fingertips as she pets him.

"What happened?" she asks after a moment or two has passed.

His eyes close. "I don't want to talk about it."

He will. Later. Once George is home from spending the night with Nina, Annie knows that they'll get Mitchell to talk. They'll be able to work out what's happening and what's wrong and how they're going to fix it - because they're a family, the three of them, and that's what families do.

Right now, though, this time isn't about solutions and isn't about taking on their problem head-on: it's about comfort, soft and simple, and letting Mitchell know that he's always got someone to turn to.
