Sicker still at the sight of his replacement's arm draped over John Paul's shoulders.
Nothing matches up, though, to the twist of rage when he hears the story -
"Is that it, then?" Craig asks. His face is red, stained with tears he won't acknowledge. "First me then him. D'you - what - d'you get off on it or something? The controversy?"
John Paul's hurt is clear on his face. Good, Craig thinks, ignoring the instinct to surge forward and comfort him. It's not his place to do that, not now.
"It's not like that," the goddamn priest says - his voice is gentle and understanding. Craig thinks that makes him hate him just a little bit more. "We never meant for any of this to happen. It just did."
Seems to happen like that a lot around John Paul, doesn't it?
"I'm so sorry," John Paul says. He sounds it, voice cracking - so sincere, so genuine.
Too late. Craig's fist curls - he needs to get this anger out any way he can - and the punch flies. The red haze at his eyes tells him that no apology can make this better.
