"Watch your shadow, Hurley," Shannon grumbles - he shifts out of the way obligingly and plops down on the other side instead. She settles against the sand again. "Is everything okay?"

"Yeah, yeah." He sounds distracted. "Just thought you'd like to know - Sayid's kinda watching you again."

"Sayid?" she repeats - and she can't fight the smile that smirks its way to her lips. Doesn't matter: the only person to see it is Hurley. She's trusted him with far greater secrets than a silly little crush. "Well, yeah. Why wouldn't he be?"

Hurley lies down beside her even though she doubts he's trying to catch a tan. "Good point."

She closes her eyes and they let comfortable silence lapse between them: when she steals a glance moment later she catches Sayid's gaze - and the warm feeling that curls in her stomach has absolutely nothing to do with the sun.

"Can I tell you a secret?" she whispers in the darkness.

Hurley barely stirs, his mound of curly hair obscuring any view the moonlight might have offered of his face. "Sure."

"I'm not- I'm not a nice girl," she mutters. Sounds silly when she says it like that - but she shouldn't be telling anyone this at all. Paolo would kill her if he knew. She can't help it, though. She trusts Hurley - it's impossible not to - and she needs to tell someone. "I've done some really awful things."

"Dude, we're on an island with, like, Kate and Sawyer and stuff. You're probably a saint by comparison. A really, really, really holy one."

"You think so?" Maybe he doesn't know her at all then. He just sees her and thinks of Exposé. She needs to set him right: he needs to understand who it is he's sharing a tent with. "It started with some damn diamonds…"

It's not like they see each other often - both too busy for that - but Hurley's good at finding time in that jewel-encrusted schedule for his friends: even his new ones. Even the ones he met just a couple of weeks ago.

He sees Hurley at the airport waiting for him uncomfortably. The crowds are thick and Hurley's head is down like he's avoiding their gazes. Probably doesn't want to be recognised.

It's just a second until he looks up and they see each other. Just a second until Kevin finds himself with a smile that almost hurts and until they're both swamped in a rib-splitting bear-hug. He hadn't known you could miss a friend you'd only just met quite so much. He could laugh at the idea. "Good to see you, buddy," he says, patting his shoulder. "So damn good to see you."

Walking out of the movie Eddie smiles as he listens to Hurley's musings on it: piece of trash to him, popcorn cinema that he'll have forgotten all about in a matter of hours. Hurley's enjoyed it, though. Hardly surprising - Eddie doesn't think Hurley's ever seen a film he didn't like - but it's enough to make him reconsider.

"They're making a sequel," Hurley says giddily. "I read it online, I think. They've got to be making another one, right?"

"They usually are," Eddie muses. Endless sequels. Constant trash.

"Awesome." Hurley nods. "We'll definitely go see it when it comes out."

"Sure," Eddie says with a shrug because, well, there are way worse ways to unwind after work on a hard case than spending time with his best mate - even if his taste in movies is terrible.

She rests her head on the side of the table and watches the Connect-4 board. Bright colours. Hurley and Dave are watching her, waiting for something, but that's okay. She smiles - her therapist would call that progress.

"Um. Dude?" Hurley says. She hears Dave scolding him to stop being such a pussy, man. "It's kinda your turn."

"I know." She's still amazed that he allows her to play. No one else will. "I'm thinking."

"Huh." Hurley nods and seems thoughtful - he looks at her like she's something special, something interesting. No one else looks at her like that, not any more. Not since David died. "Cool."

She laughs - smiles loudly - and drops her counter into the right slot. "Yeah," she agrees. "It is pretty cool, Hurley."
