Chemistry wasn’t sexy. Chemistry wasn’t sexy. Adam continued repeating the sentence to himself as Joan rattled off formulas. It wasn’t her fault he couldn’t control his mind. If she could just stop sucking the end of her pencil…
“Adam?” she said, looking over at him.
He jumped. “Yeah?” he asked, his voice a few octaves higher than normal. He cleared his throat quickly. “Sorry,” he continued in his normal voice. “What’s wrong?”
“Did you get all that? You’re supposed to be writing.”
“Oh.” He looked down at his blank notebook. “Sorry.”
“Where’s your mind today?” she wondered, looking worried.
“Oh, I have an idea,” Grace quipped before he could answer. “Here, I took the notes.” She tossed her notebook to the other side of the table.
Adam suddenly stiffened, he quickly pulled his buzzing cell phone out of his pocket and looked at the display screen as his hands shook. “I uh… it’s my dad,” he mumbled as he stood up and walked away to answer.
Joan watched him leave and turned back to Grace. “What’s up with him?”
“Right now, I think he’s regretting setting his phone to vibrate.”
