Adam listened from his fire escape as the door to his apartment opened then closed. He was sitting in a lawn chair, his feet propped up on the railing as he looked out to the horizon.
“Rove?” Grace called.
He looked into his bedroom through his window but said nothing.
She appeared after a moment at the window. “Came I come in?” She paused. “Out.” She rolled her eyes and crawled out the window onto the metal balcony. “Why are you out here?”
He nodded, motioning out to where he was looking. She followed his eyes out to look at the orange-ish glow of the sky.
“Sun’s coming up,” he mumbled.
She sat down on the stairs. “You gonna be ok?”
He looked at her. “Why wouldn’t I be?”
“Because you’re sitting on a fire escape, at five in the morning, in the middle of November.” She looked at him. “Wearing a pair of boxers and a sweatshirt.”
He shrugged. “It’s gonna be ten years in a few hours.”
“Why do you think I’m sitting on a fire escape, at five in the morning, in the middle of November in my pajamas?”
