I have a question for you all out there:

1. When it came time to quit work, because it was to taxing on your body, who made the decision?
You or your doctor.

Both? Who brought it up first or how hard was it to convince your doctor?

Actually my doctor brought it up first. At the time I was working "full time" on FMLA and ended up working two days, taking two days off to recover, working another day and taking the weekend to recover. My rhuemy looked at me and said "Time to apply for disability, you absolutely can't continue to work like this".

I use to work in health care and my dr had mentioned that soon it would be time to look into doing something else. Not quitting work entirely but doing something that didn't beat up my body so much. During the next year it was harder and harder for me to do my job so i went ahead and quit and went full time at my part time job. It was the best decision i've ever made for myself. At my next visit I told my dr i had quit health care and he was excited and said that at this appointment he was going to tell me it was "time" and he thought it was better that I had made the decision rather than him telling me i had to.
I'd say if you're thinking it's time then go ahead and talk to your doctor.. see what he/she has to say and then make your decision. There's a lot of options.. Do you need to quit work all together, cut back your hours, switch to a different line of work?
Good luck! i know it's a really hard decision to make but ultimately YOU know whats best for you and your body!

Some what of the same boat. Doc think it would be good for me to do something different, but I have been in healthcare for over 14 years and tried to find different jobs, no luck..

If you are wanting to file for disability and live in USA then consult a lawyer before you do anything. How you handle this and the rest of it can make a lot of difference!

I did. I had to. I was under a huge amount of stress and I was flaring, and the train ride down to that place took an hour and fifteen minutes each way. I had to carry a heavy bag, too, because I usually stayed over there for a night or two and slept on the couch, so I needed to bring all my stuff. Terrible! I had to bow out. My doctor was no help at all.

I've been fortunate, once I filed FMLA at work, they started making accommodations for me. I now work from home during my peak functional hours. They also provide me with as much warning about non-standard stuff as possible.

My doctor brought up FMLA because I was full time work and full time school. He made me choose, but once my work accommodated me I was able to enroll in online classes as well.

I wish you the best of luck.
