So the Dean of Admissions resigned MIT this week after it came to light that she had forged her credentials, saying she had degrees from schools she never graduated from.
This is a shame.
Not because she lied about her past; no, I agree that if you are caught in a lie on a resume you are screwed. Its a shame that its a lie that she made years ago to get an entry level position thats bitten her on the ass, but so it goes.
The shame is her message. Her big thing was to tell students to stop killing themselves by trying to be perfect for the sake of college acceptance. She wanted to "tame the college admissions frenzy" (NYT) and said living with integrity and being happy was more important than that 4.3 GPA, 20 hr/week volunteer position, sports team and part time job. This message is going to be discredited along with her because she was its most vocal supporter. And its a message that really should be pushed.
I was one of those crazy students: excessive AP classes, part time jobs, extra curriculars, good grades and even 6 years ago i was rejected by schools. I cant imagine what its like now, or the sacrifices students need to make to simply be competitive.
