For the technically inclined...

It's boring stuff, but work politics and my love life will have to wait....

My last CPU/motherboard was bought in 2006. I'm in need of an upgrade, but how much is up to debate due to budget.

For a five year upgrade, would you recommend a processor that was 2.71x, 3.06x 4.02x, or 5.16 as powerful? The upgrade will probably be used for a similar amount of time. I know benchmarks are BS, but they're all from the same site so hopefully they're at least related bullshit.

The current is an AMD Athlon X2, benchmarked in units of "performance" (no idea what metric it's actually using) at 1568.

In order of speed (and consequently price), the contenders (all AMD) are:

1) FX4100 (4 core), performance 4261 price: $374.45

2) Phenom II X6 1045T (6 core), performance 5085 price: $393.47

3) Phenom II X6 1100T (6 core), performance 6299 price: $426.47

4) FX8120 (8 core) performance 8115 price: $491.25

Some of the price is external factors, I'm going to need a new motherboard and RAM (SLI capable, 8GB RAM), the same cost is factored into these numbers since I'm going to buy them at the same time and get it assembled/tested.

Boring stuff, I know. Wacky work politics, porn musings and my love life (or the mockery that passes for it)
to come.
