I had spent over an hour frosting and decorating it. I had bought red spray-on food coloring and hearts to stencil on. It turned out quite nicely. I put it on top of the microwave for safe keeping overnight.
As I was running around Satutday just after noon trying to get everything together, I put the bag of favors on the counter. Next to that was the gift. Next to that, I took the cake off the microwave and set it on the counter. Dana and Leah and I all had our shoes on and were ready to leave the house. I remembered I needed to go back upstairs to grab the bag of cups, plates, and napkins for our dessert.
I came back downstairs and noticed Dana licking something off her fingers and thought "Wha--" and glanced over at the cake. I literally screamed. It must have been bloodcurdling, too, because Paul's dad raced in from the garage to see what was the matter. I pointed, holding back tears, and said "Look what she did to my cake!!!!!"
I called Katie, freaking out, and she calmed me down. I said we would stop and pick up a cake on our way over. She called back a minute later to tell me not to worry, her aunt would pick up a cake. After almost a full hour, we arrived, and my heart was finally beating normally again. And the new cake was lovely, but this did make for a good story.
