Fun With Small Children

Aug 31, 2004 22:12

Today I went in for my observations at the day care center. Alexis, the director, was really busy this morning so Linda, the assistant director, put me in the kindergarten room. They actually don't start kindergarten until next week, so they are having a more relaxed week. Also they are switching rooms around for the start of the school year too, so everything is all mixed up. There are 2 groups of kindergarteners, the Bears and the Lions. First I was in the Bears room and the kids were cutting out pictures from magazines for collages they would do later. I sat and cut with the girls, then went to play with the boys for a little while. Then it was snacktime, and I helped the teacher, Tracey, serve the snack. As the kids were eating, we sat down with the kids. After snacks was story time, and the boys had me read a story called "I Stink!" It's about a garbage truck. Then since it was a crappy day, the kids were going to play inside instead of going out to the playground. One of the boys wanted me to keep reading to him, so we read and talked about books. I looked at my watch and said "Wow, I thought someone was going to get me about 15 minutes ago!" So Tracey called the front desk and they had forgotten about me! Then instead of putting me with the young kids for such a short time, I got to go visit the other kindergarteners. They were making memory shirts with everyone's handprints on them one at a time. I went over to the group of kids who were drawing and coloring and they all told me the first letters of their names and had me guess what their names were. It was pretty cute. Then I made origami frogs for them. Then they asked what else I could make, but I can't do many by memory because it's been so long since I did origami on a regular basis. I made a bat. Elizabeth asked me to make her a bathtub, so I just made her a box. She put some people in it and was quite satisfied. She did want to know if I could make one with rounded corners. Then Christina asked if I knew how to make a camel. I told her I would need my book to make one because I didn't know how. This produced a million questions regarding my book, its location (my mom's house), the location of my mom's house, why she didn't just mail it to me, etc. etc. I forgot how much fun kindergartners are! Then I talked to Alexis again briefly and she's going to call me tomorrow to let me know about the job! Yay!

Quotes of the day:

"Miss Tracey is more popular that you are because you wear glasses and she doesn't!" -Juile

Me (announcing the title): "I Stink!"
Boy: You stink?!?!
Me: I Stink.

Juile: How old are you?
Me: I am 24.
Juile: How old are you, Miss Tracey?
Tracey: I'm 25.
Julie: Are you older?
Tracey: Which number is bigger, 24 or 25?
Juile (pauses and thinks): 25?
