The sun set, taking its safety with it. Clouds hung low in the sky, still dropping a variety of condoms by the bucketful. The clouds broke occasionally, allowing the bright moonlight to shine off the torn structures and broken windows in the town. Even without the moon, the ground was littered with glow-in-the-dark condoms creating a virtual path ( Read more... )

The once-thriving town might be mostly deserted during the day, but at night, it's time for the vampires to make this place their own.

Well, give Tahiri credit for persistence, at least, maybe; in a switchup from combing the library repeatedly, she'd gone to sift through whatever remained of the bookstore. Just because nothing had turned up before didn't mean . . .

Yes, someone was just a little obsessive.

This would be a lot easier if she had people she could order around.

"You look a little restless," Gavin said, having come upon what he thought was a scavenger only to recognize the person.

"Gavin. You noticed," Tahiri replied dryly. "Don't you have more interesting things to do than poking around abandoned buildings?"

Which begged the question of whether she did, but . . .

"I'll get to them," he said airily, looking at her with a mixture of amusement and...well, amusement. "You're just a stop on the way. What are you hoping to find here? A yearbook? Gonna draw hearts around the boy you like?"

"Oooh, someone thinks he's funny." Tahiri gestured carelessly with one finger to send a large chunk of plaster that had fallen from the ceiling flying past Gavin, slamming into what was left of a dividing wall. "What makes you think I'd tell you, anyway?"

"Because no one's else is here to listen to you whine," he said answered nonchalantly, moving away from the wall at her show of temper. "What are you doing? This is scavenging for books is helping nothing."

Tahiri picked up a torn-out page from what looked like it had once been a pretty old volume, skimmed it, then crumpled it and tossed it away in disgust. "Oh, yeah? You think so? Got a suggestion for what I should be doing with my time instead?"

"Perhaps finding people instead of books," he said tightly, disgust tainting his voice. "This gets us nowhere. And it makes you look like a fool."

"Phahg. Finding people." Tahiri glared at him, eyes narrowed -- yeah, that shot had hit a sore spot. "To what? Feed on? To turn?"

"Of course," he said easily, picking up a book and flinging it near her head. "We don't need any more knowledge, Tahiri. We've enough. Unless you're planning on starting some kind of school? Are you going to be our Good Samaritan?"

She didn't even have to sidestep the book, but she hit it with Force lightning as it went by because someone had massive control problems.

"Narrow goals, Gavin," Tahiri said with disdain. "I'm sure you have a hard time grasping the concept, but I have an interest in doing more than just continuing to exist."

"Then, you are a fool," Gavin said, shaking his head at her display. "This is why we can't have nice things. You and everyone else thinks it's fun to destroy them. Control. Learn some control."

"Control? I had that parroted at me by the Jedi Order half my life and look where it got me," she scoffed. "So we have the humans holed up in one building and the rest of the island is ours. Big deal. Are we supposed to just be happy with that, and play cat-and-mouse with them forever? We could be so much more than that, but no one is interested in much more than the latest meal or plaything."

"I don't see you making any suggestions!" Gavin yelled, kicking and scattered a pile of books. "All you do is bitch around and play with your powers. If you've got big ideas, how about you tell someone instead of looking like such a frightened child."

"As if I'm stupid enough to trust any of you?" Tahiri would have Force-choked him just to make herself feel better, if she'd thought it would do a bit of good, because no matter what she liked to tell herself, a frightened child was really exactly what she was. (Ladies, gentlemen, creatures of the night, this is what happens when you take the Rosetta Holocron course in Sith powers in lieu of having an actual Master.) "I'm not an idiot, Gavin. We're all looking out for ourselves here. Don't think I don't know that."
