St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador, Tuesday Morning and Afternoon

But for anyone who actually wanted to get out of the hotel, there was plenty to do today. It was a little out of the city center, on an abandoned plot the local chapter had found. Some of the houses were ( Read more... )

This large plot is already a big source of activity. Some of the houses are practically up and ready to go; in other places, foundations have only just been put down.

Fandom High volunteers won't be allowed to work with heavy machinery, but that doesn't mean there isn't help needed everywhere, so orient yourself and get to it!

On one side of the plot, people are busy trying to put up a framework for one of the houses-to-be. They could probably use a hand from some of the volunteers.

Ender had been hoping for something purely manual to do - heavy lifting wasn't a big issue. He got to work here, enjoying the chance to do something that actually contributed something.

Bruce had done some carpentry in the past, but he had never really helped frame a house. It was a new experience, and one that he was learning from quickly.

"This isn't what I pictured when you were describing school-sponsored vacations."

Just because she was lugging wood around, didn't mean she couldn't pause for chat.

"It's not usually what we get," Bruce said. "But it's almost the same thing as a ski vacation in Colorado, right?"

[Sorry, I was at work even longer than usual.]

Kate let the end of her piece of wood rest on the ground, and looked at it. "Another one of these and I guess I can see that," she remarked with a small smile.

"I don't think I've seen anyhthing like the rooms.' Massaging bathtub. In the room. Seriously.

"These are a first for me, too," Bruce said. "I thought the fireplace was a little extravagant until I saw the air massage tub. I guess they wanted to pay us back for a little bit of physical labor."

"Nice of them, even if I can't see myself actually using it." Mostly because it felt weird when she was sharing the room with someone she barely knew.

"I haven't even spent that much time in the room."

"No? Have you been keeping busy in the town or at the resort?" Bruce asked

"Little of both," she answered, hitching a shrug. "I've never been good at sitting around indoors, even in a room that nice." It just wasn't in her.

"I'd be out of there most of the time even if I was just pacing around the corridors." Which is what she did when she couldn't sleep, incidentally. "You?"

"Using the gym in the morning, hitting the town at night," Bruce said. "I might actually spend time in my room before going out for the night, but I'm generally with you. Why stay in there if there's more interesting things to do outside?"

[No worries! I'm slow due to work anyway.]

Kate nodded her agreement, resting her piece of lumber against her shoulder.

"Not that I've really done the 'out on the town' thing either," she admitted. "Just the 'out' part. I was about getting used to one roommate. I'm not much good at sharing space."

"If you want to see a little more of the town, I could always use some company," Bruce said. Okay, 'always' was overstating it. 'Occasionally, if he liked the person' was much more accurate. But anyway. "There's plenty of space out there to divvy up between us."

"You have advantage here," she told him, arching an eyebrow. "You're not going to divvy up so I get the boring parts, right?"

"I'm already here doing charity work. I'm not going to start being selfish when it comes to a city," Bruce said.
