Common Room; Afternoon

In life, there were important things, and Important Things. Doing a dedicate and extremely detailed research of the world she was in was one of the latest, and therefore, Hermione's new favorite activity. The only reason she wasn't permanently rooted in the library was that the books in this one were even more unnerving than the ones at Hogwarts, ( Read more... )

Wesley wandered in, took a look at the screen and then at the girl reading a book, and quirked an eyebrow. "I -- sincerely hope you're watching this for the ironic contrast."

Because a girl who looked smart enough - well, she was reading a history book, so it seemed like a solid guess - to be watching this? Did not compute.

"I am not." A beat, and then she looked up. Heeeeeey, England!

"Not watching it, I mean. I just...left it there. It's starting to become hard to ignore though. If I knew my way around this many useless channels, I would have found Discovery Channel already."

"Perhaps I might give it a try?" Wesley suggested, amused. "I'm quite the fan of Discovery Channel myself, in fact. I believe tonight there was supposed to be a special on owls, if you're interested."

He picked up the remote and started flicking through channels. He'd find it eventually. Maybe.

Owls, you said? Consider her interested. "Well, I am now. Owls...always are a topic of conversation where I come from." She knew about them, but no more than the average Hogwarts resident; that had to be corrected.

Huh. Interesting. Owls were a big deal for her? Well, he'd heard of weirder things from people's home universes.

"How so?" he asked.

Intrigued, Wes came to a stop on the Discovery Channel, where they were currently discussing owls' wing shapes.

Hermione made a somewhat useless and exaggerated hand movement. "It's just...a way some like to send messages. Odd, I know, considering there is cellphones and e-mails, but traditions are stronger, it seems." And wizards didn't really know about such technological advances unless they were muggle-born, but those were details.

"I'm Hermione, by the way."

Huh. That was odd, but vastly more intriguing than what the television announcer had to say. Impatiently, Wesley muted the TV so as to give Hermione his full attention.

"Wesley," he said, sticking out a hand for her to shake. "And I must say, it's quite nice to see a fellow Brit around. We seem to be in short supply here."

Not that it mattered, but hey. Mother country street cred.

As he thought more about the owl thing, he couldn't help asking, "And the birds have the intelligence for it, and everything? They know the proper routes?"

She had to smile at what she wanted to consider as a compliment. "At least this school has...a variety of students I wasn't expecting." She was all for the street cred, thanks. It would come in handy with her nonexistent street smarts and her completely adorable lack of slang.

"And they are, very if I must say. Handy little animals." Not precisely her preferred ones, but useful none the less.

"That's fascinating," Wes said, leaning forward interestedly. Then he hastily explained, "That is -- I'm not certain if you're aware, but where I'm from, and where many of the people I've met here so far are from, owls don't have that particular capability. How intriguing. Are they kept domesticated? And do other animals have special skills as well?"
