That’s the note that greets Lee and Anders when they arrive back at their dorm room. There’s no signature.
“Mysterious,” Anders says. “Think it’s our undercover contact?”
Lee nods, worrying the paper between his fingers. “Probably. They tell you who it was?”
Anders shakes his head and scratches at his robes. “Nope. Someone new though. Been deep undercover with the operation for a while.”
Lee looks at his watch. Five pm. They’ve got several hours. With a smile, Lee asks, “Want some toast?”
---
At five minutes till midnight, Anders and Lee sneak out of their room sans Jedi robes. As they walk down the dorm corridor, Lee notices several old, yellowed posters hanging from the wall.
CURFEW STRICTLY ENFORCED!
Due to the recent death of one Kitty Pryde, curfew is in effect indefinitely.
“Oh, you’re kidding me!” Lee stops to examine the posters carefully. They looked authentic and he’s pretty sure he remembers seeing these all over the dorms after Kitty’s death.
He can feel Anders looking over his shoulder. “It’s STILL in effect?”
Lee shrugs. “Looks like it. Either the person responsible hasn’t been caught yet or the administration just forgot to repeal it.”
“Couldn’t they make some new posters?”
“Guess not,” Lee answers. “C’mon.”
---
At five minutes till midnight, Lee never expected to see the campus grounds so frakking crowded. It’s extremely hard to blend in when half the school is out, doing something.
Lee notices Dr. Carter in front of them, cellular communication device in hand.
“Please just tell me where you are.” It’s not hard to miss the longing in her voice. “No, I will not do it again.”
Anders leans closer to Lee and says, “What do you think she’s talking about?”
Lee shrugs and hurries so he can continue eavesdropping.
“That was an accident,” Dr. Carter seethes. “I didn’t mean for it to be permanent! Just tell me where you are. I miss you. I hate this place without you.”
Dr. Carter veers off the path and the only way to keep listening in on the conversation would be to keep following her. Lee’s almost tempted to do so. Almost wants to send Anders off alone because there’s just something about Dr. Carter…
Anders jerks his arm and makes the decision for him. “Ask her about it next class,” he growls.
“Right,” Lee says. They keep walking in the direction of the firing range. Next to a shadowed tree, there’s another student who looks extremely familiar. Lee slows his walk.
“She’s a freak, Mom! She made me believe I had medorthophobia. Do you know what’s that done to my life?”
“What’d she just say?” Anders whispers. Lee shakes his head and makes a quick shushing sound.
As Lee and Anders are passing by her position, it suddenly clicks who she is. “Oh god,” Lee says and starts laughing. He laughs so hard that tears form in his eyes and he doubles over, holding his sides.
Anders looks confused. Nothing new there. “What’s so funny, Adama?”
Lee waves him off, still laughing. “Tell…you later.”
Anders huffs impatiently but they pass the girl with medorthophobia and Lee manages to keep his laughter in check.
They pass a small group of Jedi. The Jedi are all frowning and looking generally unhappy. It makes Lee think of the happier times with Anakin. He waves cheerfully at them. They don’t wave back.
“Ask them if they know Anakin,” Anders says.
Lee shakes his head. “Not everyone will know who Anakin is. It wasn’t like he was gonna become a special Jedi or something…”
A shout comes from somewhere to the right. “Don’t tell me Dad’s a bunny again!”
“Gods, it’s like a frakking parade,” Lee says, picking up his pace. He can see the firing range now and he hopes that it’s not as crowded as the rest of the school’s campus is.
The firing range is dark and deserted. Lee pretends to not notice that Anders is almost pressed against his side. The big baby.
Lee asks, “Should we just wait?”
Scanning the dark area, Anders nods. “Yeah, it’s midnight. We’ll see if the person’s punctual now.”
As if Anders’ words had been the signal, a lone figure steps from the shadows, cloaked in a dark jacket and a dark hat. A slow walker, eyes averted and Lee can’t identify her yet.
There’s a hammer in her coat pocket.
It’s when Lee finally gets a good look that his mouth drops open.
“Oh my gods,” Anders breaths.
