Their guide was looking worse for wear, but better than last night. "This will cost you extra," he said to anyone who would listen as he readied the camels. "The journey is not much longer from here."

Aravis was grateful for the second day that she was used to this sort of weather, harrowing though it was. She'd created a veil and wrapped her head to try to stave off the sun, and was almost trying to be friends with her stupid camel.

Amber was miserable but not complaining. Her clothes stuck to her, her hair was matty and her cheeks and nose were red. She was used to the camel by now and continued a one-way conversation with it now and again, just to amuse her and keep her spirits up.

Nor was she getting fonder of her camel.
There was a reason Juli did not enjoy field research. As they moved she decided that she was never coming back here again.
