Zero was making good use of her time in jail to try to get the bikers in the next cell to teach her Spanish curse words. They seemed to be frightened of her for some reason. She really couldn't imagine why....
"While I applaud taunting the gang members," Parker said, staring up at the light flickering over their heads, "I really don't think they're going to tell you how to say the bad words." She rubbed at a rapidly developing bruise over her eye, and glared at the guy who'd given it to her in the adjoining cell. He made kissy-faces at her, and Parker snarled.
Logan helpfully leaned over to Zero and told her how to say some of the words she was asking about. His Spanish vocabulary was limited, but colorful.
Zero tried to get the pronunciation right for a bit, then pointed at Parker and said, "You never know. Sometimes they're decent if you get to know 'em. But these are just flarky."
"True. Those bikers in Baltimore weren't so bad." Parker frowned, starting to count up in her head. "Lavender? How many times have we done this now?" She glanced over at Logan. "Not that they ever held us for long, you understand."
"And we met Flitzy. Us? Just the twice." Zero yawned. "Me? Don't ask."
Parker grinned. "Right. Scotland, and various other places... although I think this being extra-dimensional should count double." She idly kicked off her shoes and looked speculatively at the bikers in the next cell.
Two of them made the sign of the cross with their fingers, warding her off. She checked to make sure Angel didn't notice.
"Heh, yeah, this is the first time I've been arrested in another dimension. Well done, Parker. Well done." Zero stuck out her tongue at the bikers and gave them a two-fingered salute.
The PCH'ers either hooted or cowered at that, and Parker began tapping one shoe against the floor, looking for a target. "I'm just sorry I didn't get a valid Visa to post bail with in this freakish city, along with the ID's," she grumbled under breath. "Next time we go somewhere, remind me to take enough cash for bail up to GBH, okay?"
"I don' think any of us could've predicted this on the courthouse steps. I mean, really. Have hooligans no class in this reality?"
Veronica walked in and smirked at them after having received a phone call from Angel.
"Well, well, well."
Parker was nursing a black eye, and quite an attitude. "Okay, this isn't as bad as it looks."
"So I don't need to use this five thousand dollar cash advance I took against my credit card to bail you all out of here?" Veronica asked, too amused by the situation to keep from making a comment. Besides, Parker was safely on the other side of the bars at the moment and couldn't hit her.
Scowling, Parker growled, "I'll pay you back. With interest. And so on." She hated owing people favors.
Veronica pulled out her cell phone. "I think a few pictures of you behind bars might be all the payback I need."
Not that she was actually stupid enough to take pictures of Parker in jail, mind you.
Parker's glare went up a notch to incandescent, and she growled, "Mars... I don't have to leave immediately after I make bail...."
Veronica gave Parker her sweetest smile. "I would never do that."
She would. If it was anyone else.
Angel? Quiet. Also broody. Shocking.
"Long time, no see," Veronica said, smirking a little.
"This is not my fault," Angel said.
"Of course not," Veronica said. "I would never assume it was."
If it was three different people in the cell with Angel, she would definitely blame him. But it was even odds who was responsible when you considered that it was Angel, Logan, Parker and Zero involved.
"Cops around here are really annoying," Angel said. As though Veronica didn't know that already.
"Tell me about it," Veronica said. "I'm glad you called though."
"Thanks for coming," Angel said.
Veronica smiled. "I'm fairly certain on the karmic scale, I still owe you big time for saving my life a few times. It's no big deal. Besides, I would have been pissed if I had missed out on Parker behind bars."
"Not saying that part hasn't been an amusing experience," Angel said. "Just wish I was on your side."
"I'd take pictures, but I think she'd kick my ass," Veronica confided.
"Never knew you to be scared of Parker," Angel said.
"Have you seen her shoes?"
"Point."
Veronica smirked. "Is Logan being a bad influence on you? Or is it the other way around?" she teased.
"Bikers with 'tude," Angel said, by way of explanation.
"Yeah, that happens around here a lot," Veronica said. "The good news is, I swung bail for you guys. Well, except for Logan."
"Don't you think you're taking past grudges a little too far there?" Angel said.
Veronica shrugged. "There was no bail for him," she said. "I'm not sure why..."
"Whoa, wait, what?" Logan finally tuned into the conversation.
"Sorry," Veronica said. "I have no idea what's going on."
"Because there's an outstanding warrant for his arrest," said the officer who'd returned with the keys to let Angel and the others out of their cell. "For second-degree murder."
"Check it again," Logan said. "That's been dismissed."
"It's not a mistake, Echolls." The cop gave him a patient look as he held the cell door open. "A new witness came forward a couple weeks ago. The judge re-instated the warrant."
"Witness?" Logan asked in disbelief. "What witness?"
"Do I look like your defense lawyer?" The cop rolled his eyes, and said, "You'll be arraigned soon, you can take it up with the judge. He probably wants to make sure you're not going to disappear for two years again."
"Right, then," Logan said. "Call up the judge. Let's get this farce over with."
The officer gave him a look of disbelief, and then said, "On a Friday night? Are you kidding?"
Parker leaned forward, concern warring with irritation. "Okay, this is ridiculous, they have to set bail, except for--"
And then the cop explained.
"Oh, crap."
"We sure I can't fix this by hitting people a lot?" Angel asked, sotto voice.
Parker rolled her eyes and facepalmed, then winced again, whispering urgently. "You want them to lock you in a cell with eastern exposure? No! I'd bet whoever's behind this isn't in here, they're out there. The timing's too perfect. And running for another dimension might work, but Logan doesn't get to keep his inheritance that way, and we just came back here for that."
"Bad plan," Veronica assured him. "Shut up. I'll fix it."
She had no idea how, but she figured she'd be able to somehow.
"Promise me I can hit someone later," Angel said. Then he clamped down on his violent urges and let the others handle this.
Which was when the cop finally shepherded them out of the cell, leaving Logan to talk to Veronica alone. For the time being, anyway.
