Silent Hill - Day 1 - Night Post

As night starts to fall, Silent Hill gets colder and darker, but no less difficult to breathe in. Someplace to camp for the night that's inside, not surrounded by broken glass doors, and away from the packs of stray dogs in the streets would be a good idea.

Up the road a bit is a large building that looks comparatively un-charred. The sign reads

Speaking of just in case, somebody ought to stay up and make sure there's nothing coming through that busted door while people sleep.

Katniss made herself comfortable as she settled in to watch that door. She strung an arrow, just to ensure she wouldn't have to fumble around if something came through.

It was going to be a long night. Even if she wasn't asleep, this place was like every nightmare she'd ever had.

Bod hadn't been able to sleep either so he wandered out to where Katniss was. The air instantly made his sore eyes hurt but he ignored it. Somewhat.

"Are you all right?" he asked quietly, trying not to disturb...whatever might be around.

"No," she said after a moment. "But I'm as all right as anyone could be here, I guess. How are you doing?"

"My eyes hurt," he said simply, glancing out at the empty streets. "Otherwise, I'm fine. I could be worse, I suppose."

"You should be sleeping, Bod," Katniss said softly after a moment. "Why are you up?"

"I can't sleep," he said, shaking his head. "I don't want to sleep. I don't want to close my eyes."

The last time he'd done that, he'd woken up here. He could only imagine what Kate's reaction was when she'd woken up alone. He'd promised.

"I'm fine, I promise," he told her. "Have you seen anything?"

"Not yet," she admitted, sighing a little. "I'll shoot anything that comes near, though, I promise. Are you armed?"

"I don't own any weapons," Bod said and looked down at his bare feet. "I went to sleep and woke up here. I don't even have shoes."

And his feet were already cut and dirty. He wasn't feeling that too much anymore.

Katniss shifted her bow and arrow to one arm, keeping her guard up, and reached into her boot. She pulled out a small knife -- clearly only meant for skinning animals or putting them out of their misery -- and held it out, handle first, to Bod. "It's not much. But I'd rather you carried something."

"I've never used a knife before," he said but did take the skinning knife from her. "Is there anything I should know?"

"Keep the pointy end facing away from you," she said, almost smiling. "And you'll be fine."

"I think even I can manage that," he said, keeping the knife in one hand while he rubbed at his eyes with the other.

He didn't speak for a few moments while he examined the knife's edge carefully. "What do you think of this place?"

"It's like if my home bred with my nightmares," she said after a pause. "My district mines coal. The air is like this in the worst parts. But District 12 doesn't look like this."

"I'm not used to air like this. I'm just adjusting to it." And he didn't know if he wanted to. The air on Fandom was cleaner and it smelled fresh. Here, everything was stale.

Dead.

"Do you think we'll get back?"

"Not getting back isn't an option," Katniss replied firmly. "We'll get home. Don't worry."

Or she would need that knife back to slit her own throat.
