Bioshockverse - Day 1 - Night Post

Aug 06, 2010 17:09

It was hard to tell when it was evening in Rapture, but hours had passed since the Fandomites had arrived. It wouldn't be safe to move on while tired, so it was probably in your best interest if you stayed put for the night. Lucky for you, there was an apartment building with plenty of comfortable beds not far from where you were. Just be careful, ( Read more... )

An offshoot of the Olympus Heights apartment building complex, where Rapture's finest lived. It was hit hard during the civil war and was left in ruins. While it left the place looking ugly and some apartments knee deep in water, it also meant that the majority of the doors were unlocked, having been raided during the fighting. Here you'll find food, supplies, and places to sleep.

The lobby was wrecked, with bits of walls completely blown away and every bit of furniture meant to make the guests comfortable either singed by fire or broken. It wasn't the most comfortable place, but an excellent area to keep watch.

Over the course of the day, Claudia had managed to refine her method of dealing with the creeps running about to, well, flinging broken glass at them and running away. Given time to sit down and relax for a minute, she was sure she could come up with some sort of shrapnel gun, rather than just, well, throwing stuff, and the Mercury Suites looked like they might be a decent place to do that. And then maybe she could figure out what to do about her phone not working and, oh, how the hell she got here in the first place. . . .

She found a slightly more defensible spot to sit -- behind a toppled coffee table -- pushed her goggles up onto her forehead, and wished she had her head-lamp with her.

Ruined cities -- not really good at adequate working light.

Bruce wandered into the lobby, still carrying his stolen pipe. Unsurprisingly, it had gotten bloodier throughout the day as he gave himself a tour around Rapture. It would have been even bloodier, but he was still holding back against the splicers. His no killing rule was inconvenient at times, but that was when it mattered most.

He'd look into a room later, after he rested a little in an open area where it would prove tough to sneak up on him. Bruce was pretty sure there would be available rooms tonight.

It was probably best for both of them that Claudia felt secure enough behind her coffee table to actually look and see who the moving person was, rather than immediately start throwing things at them. She peered cautiously over the edge of her table instead, work-gloved hand full of broken glass and bits of rock, ready to throw.

"Please tell me the creepy things haven't learned how to look like Fandom students."

"Not as far as I know," Bruce said. He questioned whether or not that question could be an especially clever deception to get him to lower his guard before attacking, but the splicers didn't really seem like the type to hide behind a table, armed only with rubble.

After a quick look around to make sure there wasn't an attack coming from elsewhere, Bruce put the pipe down slowly as a peace offering. "I didn't know anyone else was here, too. That could rule this out as being some sort of hallucination."

"Unless we've got some seriously crazy gremlins running around." Claudia cautiously lowered her handful of rubble in return, edging slightly higher up over the edge of the table. "Which I really hope isn't the case, 'cause then I might've stabbed someone I know with a drill, earlier."

"I doubt it. A gremlin couldn't have bitten me when I first blacked out," Bruce said. Unless it was a flying gremlin and that was just ridiculous. "How long have you been here in the hotel?"

Claudia seemed to be pretty alert. If she'd been here for a while, Bruce could probably be a little less paranoid about checking every crevice in the lobby.

"Just got here a little while ago. It looked better than the wine store or the creepy indoor woods for bunking down to get stuff done."

"What kind of 'stuff' are you doing?" Bruce had to ask. "Is it safe?" He didn't necessarily mind if it wasn't safe outside of a certain radius, of course. There were murderous freaks out there, after all.

"Working on a better delivery system for shrapnel then, uh. Throwing it." Claudia shrugged, looking down at the beginnings of the shrapnel gun -- sort of a modified slingshot kind of thing. "I figured going for a defensive distance weapon might be a good idea."

"I'm beginning to think you're a good person to have around in a crisis," Bruce said as he looked at the device-in-progress. "Do you need anything to help you with that?"

"Building stuff's just what I do. I could use better light, maybe?" Claudia shrugged. "Well, and a spare battery or two for my drill, but I'm not holding out much hope for that."

"I'll see if I can find something. Yell if anything attacks," Bruce said.

The fact that he said "if" rather than "when" meant Bruce was in a relatively optimistic mood at the moment.

Claudia saluted. "Pretty sure I will, anyway." Then break things and run away. It was a system for her, by now.

Bruce returned a few minutes later with a couple candlestick holders with lit candles in them. He didn't have any matches but give a resourceful guy a couple minutes with pieces of wood taken from broken furniture and he could do a lot.

"This isn't ideal, but it should help a little," Bruce said. "Just don't let them go out. It was hard enough to get them lit in the first place."
