If Eileen thought getting settled in World’s End was tough, it was nothing compared to how big of an adjustment it was to leave it all behind. It was a dangerous and unpredictable city, but the friendships she forged there were some of the most precious in her twenty-six years. Claire, Roxas, Alex, Avari, Henry, Tom--

Tom.

Everything ached when his name passed through her mind. She had the chance to make her feelings known, convincing herself that he possibly felt the same, but she was jerked out of the city just as suddenly as she arrived. Eileen should’ve felt thrilled to finally get her mother on the phone and move away from Ashfield like she planned so many months earlier, but it was impossible to get motivated now; and she delayed packing up and leaving for so long that the reservation on her new place expired. In the end, Frank agreed to let her migrate to an apartment on the first floor. She was still eager to put distance between herself and room 303. That hadn’t changed.

Apartment 108 offered her a different view of the city, which was a welcome distraction. On top of everything else, Henry was still missing. Presumably stuck in World’s End where Eileen trusted Claire to look after him. She had to. The alternative was too awful to even consider.

Between job hunting and therapy sessions, Eileen spent most of her free time curled up on the couch, watching the world go by outside her window. Cars zooming through the streets at all hours; people filing in and out of Fuseli’s, often with to-go boxes; and the way the city lit up so beautifully at night. It was comforting to know that things hadn’t really changed while she was gone, even if she felt inconsolably alone.
