Reasons I don't like thinking about financial things

If you give billing people your wrong address by mistake, it can cause problems. Especially if you're like me, and you don't really pay attention to such things - you just pay each bill as it comes in. I always would have thought that if the bills were constantly being returned by the mailman to the sender, they would try calling me by phone or sending an e-mail. Instead, apparently it is normal for them to sick the collection agency on you. I hope my credit rating hasn't been significantly damaged by this mixup ... or by the other even longer delays that are 100% my insurance company's fault.

I suppose in the future I really should keep track of my debts myself and go out and pay them when I don't get billed. Maybe I can ask them to stop telling me how much they think I owe while they're at it and just let me pay the correct amount. I don't know why computer-assisted billing departments are incapable of consistently adding numbers correctly, but I trust my back-of-the-envelope scribbles a lot more than I trust what I see in their mailings. Hopefully the crappy companies I've been dealing with are the exception rather than the norm. Blah.
