Ari had always sworn she would never date anyone she had known her whole life. With how many kids she did know for a long time, she found that notion a very hard one to follow.

Des used to tell her that she would not only end up dating, but marrying someone she least expected.

Ari gave her sister a causal look while they stood at her locker. “Des, easy for you to say. You don’t worry about guys-”

Des hushed her twin, dropping her voice to a low whisper as well. “Being gay has nothing to do with it, Ari. You’re so concerned about how long you’ve known the guy that you miss out at what’s right in front of you.”

Ari simply rolled her eyes, closing her locker with a sigh. “Really? And what am I missing, Des?”

“Well, if you’re too blind to see it, that’s too bad for you, isn’t it?”

Ari sighed as she watched her sister heading down the hall. Twin or not, it was rare that she understood what went on in that girl’s head. Still, dwelling on it was pointless, so she hoisted her bag up on her shoulder and made her way towards her class.

She should have known by now that her mind didn’t let her forget things that easily, because somewhere between point A and point B her mind started to travel and she found herself smashing into someone else’s shoulder.

She mumbled an apology, stumbling to the side.

She looked up and met the bright blue eyes of Finn Martinez, one of the many kids she had known forever. He smiled at her, reaching out and grabbing her shoulders to steady her. “Been drinking this early?”

A slow smile spread across her face. Okay, so Finn’s sense of humor was an acquired taste, but she found him oddly amusing, even if he was poking fun at her. “Just thinking.”

“Thinking?” He leaned close to her, dropping his voice to a conspirator's whisper. “Ari, this is school. It’s no place for thinking. What would your father think?”

“School no place for thinking?” She arched one brown eyebrow. “Well, that would explain your grades, wouldn’t it?”

“Ouch!” He clutched his chest, that impish smile of his across his face. “That hurt, Ari. It really did.”

“Such a drama whore.”

“Who? Me? Nah.” He waves a hand, heaving his backpack higher on his shoulder. “You must be thinking of Rory. She’s a drama whore.”

“Such a way to talk about your sister.”

“Hey, I love the girl, but you have to admit, she lives for the drama.”

Ari shrugged. She wasn’t going to comment either way with that. Instead she glanced nervously around the hall. “I should get to class.”

Finn nodded. “Sure thing. Now, don’t go bumping into anyone else on your way.” He brushed his lips lightly against her cheek. “You’ll make me jealous.” There was that impish smile again as he turned around, calling down the hall. “Devin, you baldheaded freak! Wait for me.”

Ari watched him jog off to catch up with his brother and wondered briefly that if she didn’t have that rule about dating people she’d known forever, if Finn would ever go out with her.

Nah, she decided. Finn thinks I’m just this stupid little kid.

“Ari!”

She smiled to herself, turning around. “Coming! Cool your jets, Des!”

She hurried off to meet up with her sister not knowing Finn’s eyes were lingering on her.
