Submarine picture again

I've been tweaking this all day, think this is as good as I'm going to get it unless I think of something specific I need to add for the scenario. I may make the windows smaller, but apart from that I think it's OK ( Read more... )

I see 8 seats and 2 diving suits... that crew had better hope they don't all have to make an emergency exit at the same time. :)

No emergency hatch either, in case the main hatch gets buckled or dented... Could lead to all sorts of troubles as the rest of the crew have to shelter in the engine room while the control cabin is flooded to let the divers back in. And then the difficult repairs...

Mmm, possibly I'm being over-critical, but engineering-wise, I don't think this design would have much pressure resistance. That concavity around the engine is a serious weak point. Generally, you want everything on the hull to be convex on at least one axis. That's the reason real life subs are all cylinders or, for the deep sea ones, spheres or collections of spheres.

I don't think there's any particular reason why a cone wouldn't work as well as a cylinder, so I think the general shape might work, if you assume the hull is a not very eccentric ellipse in cross-section. The engine room concavity might work if the engine room is filled with non-compressible oil (real life deep sea subs use this technique) but then you have that flat bulkhead, which is almost as bad as a concavity. And you'd need an airlock to get into it.

Least work would be to change the rear hull to a convex surface, I think, with about half the curvature of the dimple you have now. Not as sexy looking, though.

Thanks - I'll see what I can do, it ought to be easy enough to change it.

Sweet! It looks like a submarine now. Though not as sexy.
