How you know you have too much stuff

Well, of course I know I have too much stuff. I've been in a 720 square foot apartment for 35 years so of course I have too much stuff - a combination of little incentive to empty the closets and all that time. But, there are points of epiphany.

I was missing a summer jacket that I had splurged on at a craft show. I knew I had it, but it wasn't in the closet, so I trundled down to my storage locker (4.5 x 4.5 x 5 feet) on the far west side of Manhattan to look for it, expecting to find it tucked in the wrong box along with things that are (temporarily I hope) too small, or sewing material or something. Nope. It was in a hanging bag, which is good, no wrinkles. But it was nestled next to 6 summer dresses that I hadn't even remembered I had! Somehow the bag got left behind in the great switch-the-seasons escapade in the spring.

A couple of these dresses are not the best outfits for me, and I'll probably give them away. After all, if I've gotten through this summer (THIS SUMMER) without them, why not give them to someone else? But two of the dresses are among the most delightful ones I've owned - and I completely forgot about them. When you don't even remember your favorite hot weather dresses, you have too many clothes.
