i'm not even sure if we're disagreeing about anything but...
greatness was discernible in the time of the puritans...puritans were only a small group of fanatics, they didnt' rule the world...we've just been immersed in it for the past few weeks , so we tend to think everyone then thought like the puritans.
okay...i really do get what emerson was getting at...but i think he generalized way way too much... the whole greatness and misundrestanding creating each other thing doesn't sit well with me. thats what i was tryign to argue.- like i said above...it seems to stress predestination, and i believe an individuals will affects them much more than their sociability or intelligence. i was pretty much speculating the point, i'm not even positive exactly where i stand on this...which is why it's fun to discuss.
and have you ever met anyone of any level of maturity, who did not find love to be the all important goal? what is achievement, or greatness , or power , sans love? in no way meanign to be offensive... i think perhaps only a fool would pick greatness over love if they had the choice- and i think everyone has that choice.
