When they told him it was terminal he seemed to be way too collected.

He was about to die, yet he didn’t seem to care.

As a fact, there wasn’t much worth living for these days. He had always believed he would die in battle one day, not due to some kind of disease. But it really hadn’t mattered much anyway. Now he knew that he would die soon, sooner than expected. The sooner the better.

That he was sick he knew of for quite a while already. His disease had killed many people around him previously, including his parents. He felt almost cursed by it, yet no doctor was sure what this disease really was about. Some people said the ‘white people’, the gaijin have brought this sickness to Japan, but no one could tell for sure. There was no explanation for it. He had accepted his fate as a doctor discovered it struck him as well when he had been 15 years old. At that time he was already training to become a samurai one day, he was ready for battle, even ready for death.

He reached out to pick up his katana before it occurred to him that he wasn’t allowed to carry his sword any more. He was a samurai without a weapon. He was nothing. Everything he lived for was gone.

The Boshin War was over; the Emperor Meiji had abolished the samurai’s rights to wear their weapons. As a fact, this wasn’t what he had been fighting for. He fought on the Emperor’s side all along, just to be diminished of what he had been fighting for. Not only him, everyone in his clan. He wanted to get rid of the shogunate, not his life.

So he just bowed his head and got up to leave the doctor’s practice. He would not return to that place.

Upon exiting through the front gate of the rather rotten practice his best friend and comrade for years in battle already, Shiroyama Yuu, waited for him with a concerned expression. His friend, called Aoi by the members of their clan, had known there was something wrong with him for quite a while already. And he had been the one who finally convinced him of seeing a doctor, just to be sure.

“So, what did he say?” Aoi asked.

Instead of answering the question he just shrugged his shoulders.

“Uruha, spill the beans!”

“Ah, drop it…” he murmured and pushed his friends hand off his shoulder as he attempted to walk away.

“You might have three or four months, but maybe only three weeks. I’m really sorry I don’t have better news for you.” the medic had told him. “Make the best of it, while you can. I’m sorry.”

He nearly had gotten himself killed more than once already and death was an unwanted necessity for him.
