Who: Selphie and Rinoa
What: Rescuing Rinoa from Ultimecia's castle
Where: Uh, Ultimecia's castle
When: During the battle between the heroes and Ultimecia.
Warnings: Uh, my first try at not only a female character, but Rinoa, so be warned... heh. <3
Selphie wondered, as she wound her way through the catacomb-like maze of Ultimecia's current palace, if there was some lesson early in SeeD, that none of them could remember, that prompted them to take their hardest and most dangerous missions alone. After all, even after all the scolding she'd given Squall, here she was, stalking the hallways alone, looking for Rinoa. A soft beep in her head from Ailani alerted her to the correct door, and adjusting the helmet of the uniform she'd stolen off a guard, she pressed the button to open the door.
And there was Rinoa, in a crumpled pile, her blue duster spread out around her like an ocean of fabric. Her legs trembled even as she lay on the floor, and her face was entirely hidden by her arms. "No... please... no more..." she murmured, cringing away from the opening door.
With a soft sigh, Selphie yanked off the helmet, just as the door hissed shut, and let it fall to the floor. "It's okay, Rinoa. It's just me."
Rinoa's eyes flickered upward over her left elbow. "...Selphie...?" She moved to try to sit up, but her arms didn't support her as well as she would have liked, and she tumbled back down again.
"Yeah," Selphie confirmed, hurrying to her side. She dropped as gracefully as possible in the clumsy armor to the floor. "Are you hurt?"
"Haven't eaten..." Rinoa murmured. "No water... endless torturing..." So, in other words, no, she wasn't hurt, but she was really weak and couldn't do much with her body.
The SeeD's jaw clenched in anger, but she forced the emotion down. There was work to be done. She could scream and cry later. "It's okay. I have a Potion. I'm going to help you drink it, and then we're going to leave." She kept her voice in its sweetest soprano, as if they were talking about going shopping.
"...potion..." The word was faintly recognizable to Rinoa, and it sounded like a good idea. She managed to lift herself up more steadily this time -- it was probably Selphie's presence that made it possible -- and accepted the help of the Potion. "Why... did you come?"
Selphie blinked. "Because you asked me too."
Rinoa blinked back. "I...did?" Her memory was a little fuzzy about... oh, everything that had happened in the past couple of months.
"Well," said Selphie, sliding an arm under Rinoa's shoulder's to support her. "You really just said you wanted to leave this place. So I came to get you."
"It... was very nice of you." That's all she could say? Nothing else made sense, and words formed funny. It sucked figuring out that you might or might not turn into an evil sorceress! Her brain felt like it had been fried with a bugzapper and then run through a blender. Some of the snarky 'conversations' with Ultimecia had really blown Rinoa's mind, and she wondered if this whole thing might lead to her becoming Ultimecia... in which case, she would have done it to herself... and it was all horribly circular... and Rinoa didn't get it. She hated not understanding things and it happened all too often! "Th...Thank you." Finishing the Potion, some color returned to her face and her entire frame stopped wobbling.
"You're my friend," Selphie said firmly, a gloved hand running over Rinoa's hair. "One of my best, even when you're not around. I'll always come when you need me..." She flashed Rinoa a smile. "You ready to go home?"
"........yes." She didn't seem reluctant, just unsure. "Home. I can't fight her without... fighting myself."
"The others are taking care of her. I'm taking care of you," said Selphie, emphasizing the difference.
"Again," Rinoa murmured. Taking care of her again. Taking care of Rinoa again. Everything was again, again, again. "I am... ready to go." She pushed herself up into a crouch and then stood up, very, very slowly, leaning on Selphie for support.
Oh, super. Rinoa was crazy too... Selphie wondered very vaguely, thinking of Squall, if she was going to be one of the only sane SeeD left. Hey, wasn't that funny?
Not really. She murmured support as she helped Rinoa to the door. There, she paused. If Rinoa couldn't move quickly... how were they going to get by?
"I think... she will be glad to see me go," Rinoa murmured as they moved at a moderately slow pace down the hallway. Everything was still dizzy, but at least the things that were spinning were in focus!
"You think she's gonna let us just walk?" Selphie blinked, but she trusted that Rinoa knew the score, so to speak.
"If... she doesn't... then you can run and I'll distract her." Because, hey, Rinoa was already dooming the rest of the generations, so why not sacrifice herself for Selphie?
There was a tiny snort from Selphie. "I appreciate the gesture, but I don't think so."
"She... won't hurt me," Rinoa said. "She's worried that if she hurts me, she'll hurt herself."
"...she's been torturing you. Clearly, she's okay with that." Selphie peered around a corner.
"Mentally..." Rinoa wasn't sure anymore. Had she really been tortured? She didn't know. Everything was so fuzzy and unhappy! Fuzzy was supposed to be happy! Why was it not happy?? WHY?! "Let's just hope for the best." Yeah, good plan.
"That's my motto," beamed Selphie. There was a gentle clicking, as with her mechanical hand, she pried apart a door. "Booyaka! And there she is."
"An airship... has never looked so... nice," Rinoa observed.
"Isn't she beautiful?" Selphie giggled despite herself. "Built her ourselves." Well, that was kinda true.
"Anything... that will take me home... is beautiful," Rinoa said, looking at Selphie and smiling also.
"Then I must be gorgeous," announced Selphie, and with a slight flounce, began to haul Rinoa towards the ship. Faintly, the sounds of battle could be heard outside.
