Hyne was in an uncommonly good mood as she ghosted around her wing of the palace. She hummed quietly to herself as she walked; almost unaware of where she was going by the look of things, drifting aimlessly. She was no lost, however, and knew exactly where she was going. Rather, she was being drawn there. Her link to her pets was functioning quite well, especially in the palace. They could go wherever they wished within the confines of the castle, so long as they didn't stray.

Well, if they did, the consequences would be none too pleasant. Her current aim was for the little cowboy she'd brought from her home world. She adored him. He was so full of energy and... life.

Irvine had spent most of his time wandering and trying to keep his mind off things. Especially off what had happened with Squall. He also took every moment he could to shout, snarl and curse Hyne. The Cowboy was after all reckless and he didn't give a rats ass what she did to him, it just felt good to get that stuff off his chest. He felt a shiver run down his spine and knew what that meant, she was coming. A scowl marred his handsome features.

She appeared at the far end of the hall, smiling serenely. "Good evening pet," she cooed, stalking towards him. "You look a bit listless."

" Do I?" Irvine muttered with a roll of eyes." And you care because..." His voice trailed off here. As she stalked towards him, he stalked away. He did not want to be within ten paces of her.

"Aw, why so sour a mood Pet?" she asked, feigning a pout. "There's no reason for you to take that tone with me." She paused thoughtfully and glanced towards him. "I have brought you a gift," she said with a touch of reluctance.

Irvine literally tensed at the mention of a 'gift', he could only imagine and he really didn't want to know." And as for my mood? I would think that it would be blatantly obvious." He turned his head, blue eyes narrowing ever so slightly." It involves you taking control of my body."

She smiled graciously. "You'll thank me in time," she assured him and reached into the long folds of her dress, pulling out something that should have been very familiar: Irvine's handheld. Suitably modified so that the signals being sent out were intercepted and any replies as carefully scripted as the entries that appeared there now. "I considered keeping this from you," she said musingly. "After all, the information is hardly pleasant and I like to keep my pets as... happy as I can. I assume you wouldn't want to know anyway."

Irvine's eyes were now trained on the handheld and he did his best to keep the worry from his face. This was Hyne, surely she would do anything to make his life a misery? He took the handheld from her and didn't dare to look at it for a moment until he simply entered his username, password and let himself into the information that the handheld had to offer.

She stood back and watched him with a carefully neutral expression of her own. The news from the Garden was no good news. Battles were being engaged and lost. Two of the top leaders had been lost along with their squads in skirmishes. People wounded - names appeared.

Farther back in the list, the date matching the time Irvine had been taken, a message appeared, having been sent out to the headmasters of the other two Gardens. The Commander of SeeD had been severely wounded and backup was needed. His status? Critical.

There was no more on that score.

Irvine's face started to pale and he fought hard to keep his hand steady as his eyes raked over the information in front of him. Squall was in a critical condition because of him? Leaders had been lost? Squads were dead? He was suddenly very glad he happened to be near a wall as he could feel his legs buckling. Should he believe this? Was this data real? No matter what the logical part of his brain told him, he couldn't take his eyes off the information and he couldn't rid himself of a terrible feeling of dread that seemed to settle in the pit of his stomach.

She raised an eyebrow. "I feared this," she murmured. "But that is as the battle stands now." She shrugged. "This is the price for arming oneself against the Sorceress. Don't believe me? Send a message to your former companions. See what they have to say."

He clenched his jaw and lifted his eyes to Hyne's face." You did this." His voice was laced with anger, hurt and pain. His entire body was shaking and he was fighting with himself. He would not cry, not in front of her." And I will be sending them a message because I don't trust you as far as I can throw you." The words 'critical condition' were permanently stuck in Irvine's mind and he swallowed back the sudden lump in his throat.

She smiled suddenly, like a snake. "You cannot win, pet," she purred. "None of you can. Your commander is dying and your forces are routed. It will only be a matter of a day or two before it is all over."

" Don't underestimate your enemy, first rule you learn at the Garden." Irvine retorted. He could not and would not believe this, how could this happen?

"Ah pet, perhaps it is you who should not underestimate me," she replied and turned away. "Or overestimate the prowess of your friends and loved ones as well. Good night pet. Sweet dreams."

As she left, Irvine's legs buckled and he slid to the ground. One hand remained around the handheld whilst the other pushed into his hair." This cannot be happening." He muttered softly almost a little desperately. He shut his eyes and tried to calm himself before he went about posting a message.
