Heart Beats
Badump. My heart beats. She walks into the room and all eyes fall upon her. She's an idol, one lavished with praise and adoration. I'm unworthy of simple recognition.
Badump. I hear her in the hallway and freeze. She has my tests back and would like to talk about them. While I decide whether to be sick with worry or joyous, she suggests dinner.
Badump-bump. She shows up in the most gorgeous dress I have ever seen. Words failing me is an understatement right now, I can't even get a thought together. I somehow manage to step aside as she enters. Dinner is brief, but she doesn't mention my schoolwork once through it. When she leaves I miss her presence like a piece of my heart is gone with her, before promptly throwing up from the stress of it all.
Badump-bump. She smiles at me when she enters. I manage a broken smile back myself. I never noticed how perfect her teeth are until then. I never noticed how loud my heart was, and fear that she can hear it over the clamor of students around me. A hidden part of me wishes she can.
Bump... I was in the training yard, well... training- when something sideswiped me. I can barely remember fighting the giant lizard during that, and it goes dark after, until this bright bloom of light as my eyes open. I can hear my heart softly beating in my ears, and it gets all too much louder when I see who's sitting over me with the worst expression on her face. I pray to Hyne that I didn't hurt her somehow, but when she sees my eyes open she gathers me in her arms and refuses to let go.
Badump-bump. The devilish doctor says my heart is strong and that I can go. I'm about to leave when she congratulates and thanks me. I question why and she replies that she'd never heard my heart beat so loud before. She says it was the same for her too. I don't have to ask who she's talking about. I laugh it off, but the devil says that she had been unhappy for as long as the doc can remember. I laugh again. Her, unhappy? She has the most brilliant smile I've ever seen. The doctor replies that that's true, but I'm the only one who's ever seen it.
