“I ain’t seeing why we're not just leavin’ now, you heard the man, they been signing things that ain’t right-s’ their problem.” Jayne had been grouching for near on fifteen minutes as they carefully sealed up the rotten crates, saving them for the pleasure of the travelling rep.

McCormack and his men had wandered back up to the town, undoubtedly to spread the bad news and putting a mighty big trust in Mal meaning his word, since he’d left their payment for them despite Mal’s refusal to take it.

“An’ what are we gonna do anyway? Not like he’s gonna have more of them things on him or like we can steal back what their owed - might as well just cut losses an’ go.”

“Ni juede wo hen ben ma?” Mal raised an eyebrow, his eyes on the sulking merc. In all honesty Jayne wasn’t half as much protesting as he normally would, only doing just about enough to be seen as normal. Mal figured much as the man wouldn’t want to admit it, the farmers' troubles had got to him. Either it was because he came from a planet with hardships a plenty, or the idea of carrying out some payback was softening him some.

“Now I ain’t one for shirkin' on deals, and I’m mighty glad you were there in case things got bad, but we’re not leaving these people with dud produce. We do a job, we get paid. That so much is true, but I ain’t liking it when fancy, rich people like to slum down on the rest of us, gettin' greedy and smug while people get poorer. And we don’t have no one sullying our name and makin’ us out to be wrong 'uns, we do our jobs right, dong ma?”

Jayne let out a grunt that Mal took as a reply, smile spreading over his face as they pushed the last container inside Serenity, shutting the cargo doors behind them. Clapping the man on the back, Mal added, “Might be chance for some violence later if this McCormack’s words hold true an’ this rep don’t listen.”

A grin twitched at the edge of Jayne’s mouth, “Suits me fine Mal, don’t mind gettin' my hands dirty, long as we’ve got the money. Just not one for talkin’.”

“And you shouldn’t be; gonna need you there anyway, maybe add a touch of intimidation to nudge the fine gentleman into doin’ what’s right.” Mal was smiling though it was more to hide the anger he felt at being set-up on such a job. At being the literal bearer of bad news to folks who didn’t rightly deserve it. “I’ll be callin’ the crew up to talk over what’s going down, maybe think of a few things to do lest the gentleman’s uncooperative, need you to go get Simon and River.”

“What we be needin’ them for?” Jayne squinted at him, stopping in the doorway as Mal started up the steps towards Inara’s shuttle. “Ain’t no way the doc be wanting to get attention or his pretty hands dirty an’ River…” He paused, “She might be all hands on an' stuff now, but she's still a touch wrong in the head, keeps staring with those big ole eyes-”

“I want all my crew together on this Jayne, all of ‘em-includes Simon an’ River, crazy as she can be. “ Mal kept his gaze steady on Jayne’s, knowing the tensions between them all but also believing Simon should have won some measure of respect in Jayne’s eyes, as he had Mal, tackling Early and the Alliance to save his sister.

“Won’t put them in sight just in case, an’ I’ll give you the pleasure of groundin’ them to their bunks when that time comes, but Simon’s got smarts we can use. Boy’s done a fine job plannin' heists in the past and it could be that we can use that now, ’sides he’s always one for a sob story. Albatross will no doubt have somethin' planned 'fore we even get together.” Amused as he wasn’t feeling right now, the expression on his face suggested he was as Mal added, “Are we havin’ a real problem here Jayne, or are you jut grouchin’ to save face on doing the right thing?”

Jayne snorted, “Not baitin’ you Mal, just let me be the one to lock them in their bunks when this is on an’ do the duh liou mahng we’re meetin’ violence if words fail.” Jayne had little confidence in talking and powers of persuasion even if the talker was Mal, a sharp punch to the gut prompted a man more than words ever could.

Mal couldn’t resist the slight smirk that came over his face as he walked up the stairs. “Oh you can tuck them up all safe an’ sound before you get to play.”

“Who gets to play?” Kaylee’s voice bubbly as always had Mal pausing in his step, as Jayne rubbed at his ear. Her entrance was unexpected and silent till she squeezed past Jayne to stare at the returned cargo boxes, confusion obvious on her face.

“Damnit Kaylee!”

“Didn’t they want it?”

Jayne’s curse almost drowned out Kaylee’s question, but Mal caught her meaning as she looked from the boxes back up to him, her bewilderment obvious.

“Not the best time for explanations, Kaylee, just be getting yourself up to the dinning area. We got paid but we got problems, an’ we’re keeping’ the cargo till it’s sorted.” Mal would have left it at that but Jayne was all but spilling at the mouth to explain his grouches.

“Damn seller screwed us over, cargo’s all rotten an’ go se. Ain’t no fault of ours but we’re stayin’ on to make sure the folks are sorted out right.” Jayne didn’t look annoyed in the slightest as he spoke, making Mal wonder just how much of his earlier words had been for posterity's sake.

“Ah that ain’t right, making all those folks lives go down the drain." Sadness played out briefly across Kaylee’s face, the emotion so out of place quickly lost in a huge smile, “Shiny. Ah see I told you before you’re a good man Jayne, wantin’ to help all those people out.”

Mal felt seemingly ignored and his mouth dropped open as Jayne puffed out his chest, a smile twitching on his lips at Kaylee’s words.

So now he’s all for the plan with Kaylee grinning’ all over him? Mal shook his head, clearing the thought as he stomped up the stairs, Kaylee’s enthusiasm growing quieter as she and Jayne left the room. “I’m not playin’ at bein’ a good man, just doin’ what’s right.” He muttered to himself.
