Amity Organizational Post Chapter three
“I thought I was supposed to be cooking dinner” said Zoë amiably entering the room.
“Ya still are. Just some of us won’t be here for it.” She rummaged through her locker gatherin’ food for their night.
“Oh?’
Kaylee leaned forward and whispered conspiratorially “we’re havin’ a girl’s only night in Inara’s shuttle.” She giggled, “wanna come? Let the men cook their own dinner.”
Kaylee was mindful of both River and Inara’s words but she didn’t want Zoë to feel lonely or left out.
“You’ll be talking about useless men and such?”
“How’d ya know?”
“Let’s just say I’m real familiar with hopeless males.” Zoë gave her a friendly smile and reached into her locker. “I won’t come this time thanks. But I’ve got something I’d like to contribute.” She handed Kaylee a small packet.
“Oh!” Kaylee almost squealed “Caramel! Where’d you get it?”
Zoe shrugged, “Wash loved caramel - I always have some around.”
“But don’t ya want to keep it?”
“I’ve got plenty more.” The other woman’s voice lowered, “and I know where the Captain’s got some oranges.”

“River,” Kaylee appeared at the doorway of her friends’ bunk, arms full of ill-gotten gains, “grab somethin’ quick!”
The girl leant forward and grabbed the bag of oranges that was slipping from Kaylee’s grasp. “The Captain’s oranges?”
Kaylee giggled happily, “and caramel from Zoë, some protein, and Jayne had liquorice.”
River winced at the combination. “Jayne gave you it?”
“When I told him it was to help ignore Simon.” Her friend grinned at her unrepentantly. “I’m really lookin’ forward to havin’ some girl time, to have fun.”
Picking up a carry bag River started packing Kaylee’s haul into it. “No dinner time tension.”
“No-one sayin’ the wrong things and not understandin’.”
The two girls nodded at each other and headed happily toward Inara’s shuttle. Only to be waylaid by the Captain who gave them a suspicious look before saying, “little Albatross you and me need to talk about some course corrections.”
“Aw Captain, not now,” Kaylee interrupted before River could answer. “We got somethin’ planned for this evenin’.”
“It’ll have to wait.” Mal gave them his lopsided smile. “We’ve got us a job coming up and I need my pilot.”
“But Captain,” River protested, “job’s two days away.”
“I like to be prepared is all. Just once I want everything to go smooth.” Mal grasped her wrist gently. “And you little genius, are gonna help me.”
As he towed her off, River gave Kaylee the carry bag and shot a helpless look at her over her shoulder. “Enjoy your night! Don’t forget Simon is a boob!”
Kaylee sighed, as if she could forget. Simon always had his foot in his mouth and never made a move toward her. She had almost made up her mind to give up on him.
“The Captain shanghaied River…” she started as she entered the shuttle. “Oh ‘Nara don’t it look beautiful?”
The companion had set candles all round the room, their light reflected off the drapes and rugs making the already lush room feel warm and inviting.
Not only did the shuttle look beautiful, so did Inara. Her dark glossy hair was all tumbled over her shoulders and she was covered in a silky robe that seemed to make her skin glow.
Kaylee was suddenly conscious that her overalls, though her favourites, were faded and old; and that her hair, though clean, was just hangin’ round her face like usual.
Inara glanced over at her suddenly silent friend, observing the downcast expression. “Kaylee, what’s wrong?”
The girl grinned at her ruefully. “I just feel kinda plain and ordinary,” she explained gesturing at her surroundings.
“You’re nothing of the kind!” Inara protested. “Seeing it’s just you and I this evening, how about in addition to dinner, we do a makeover?”
The mechanic’s face lit up with her familiar grin. “Hair, face and everythin’?”
“Anything you want.” Inara promised.
