Wow, am I the WORST at getting a chapter in on time - I apologize profusely, for events in and out of my control over the past month. It might not make up for my lack of progress until now, but I also bring some goodies...
Something Organizational Post I seriously loved this fic, and am veeeerry nervous about ending it - I hope you all enjoy!
Title: Something
Setting: Post BDM (Post Simon/Kaylee)
Pairing: River/Kaylee
Rating: Rish? There's some sexin' - nothing horribly graphic (c'mon guys, I know we love the smut but I didn't think the gals would be all crazy!porn!sex their first time out [wink]).
Warnings: I've been out of this one for so long, I hope it all makes sense and is funny and sexy and a good ending for this awesome story!
The frantic bustle faded to calm along with the lights of Persephone. It felt good to be off world again, ship and crew intact (if a little worse for wear). Mal approached the bridge with a smile and the hope his flyer wasn't in too much pain.
"Hey there little Albatross, how's that shoulder feelin'-" He stopped asking when he realized the cockpit was empty. All sensors blinked normal, the switchboard calm and in flight. Taped to the main navigation screen was a small scrap of paper filled with tiny, precise handwriting. It read simply:
Flight plan computed and programmed. ETA Three Hills atmosphere 7 days 14 hours 26 minutes.
We will come out eventually.

He wanted to protest. He wanted to drag them from whoever's bunk they were holed up in and lecture them good and long about the fallacies of shipboard romances - but he wasn't going to. One reason was the very good possibility he'd get killed in the process, the other being the look on their faces on Serenity's cargo ramp while they watched the former prisoners depart.
It was a look of love, as pure and as true as he'd ever been witness to.
He'd meant what he'd told River, passing through the storm in their newly repaired bird not so long ago - love gave 'em wings to glide, both ship and crew. Can't take to the sky without it. Sure as hell can't survive without it. Smiling slightly, he carefully peeled the edges of the note from the screen, folded it and placed it in his pocket. His Pilot and his Mechanic deserved rest and recuperation from a hard job done and he was willing to oblige them.
If there was one other thing he knew about taking a boat into the black, it was that you don't mess with those flyin' and fixin' her.

"Hell, Doc, it's just a scratch, nothin' to get all riled up about…" Simon fought his temper for the umpteenth time and shoved ineffectually at the larger man's arm.
"It will be something to 'get riled up' about if it becomes infected. I'm guessing it's been a while since you've properly bathed…" Grinning wide, Jayne surrendered to the irritated man's prodding and plopped down on the exam table.
"Damn prisoners don't know a rescue operation when they see one."
"Sure, because I would have wept for joy at the sight of you, bursting with weapons and glaring furiously." Jayne barked a laugh at that, and gestured impatiently with his bleeding arm.
"Just stitch it or whatever and hurry it up. Got gear to stow."
"Just needs a good disinfectant and a bandage, the bullet just grazed the skin..." Simon trailed off as he rummaged through his cupboards for supplies, mentally noting that he needed to check on River. He opened a cabinet door and found the gauze - along with a note. It was sticking to the box with a small piece of medical tape and unmistakable handwriting.
"What's up, Doc?" He dimly heard Jayne ask before cracking up at his own joke.
It read:
We have all the necessary supplies to change and redress the bandage. Healing is progressing properly without infection.
Please refrain from disturbing us.
I mean it, Simon. I love you but I will hurt you.
~R
"Wha…wh…what?" He stammered helplessly, the letters rearranging themselves on the small scrap of paper to form unintelligible phrases while his mind stumbled over the possibilities.
"Love notes? I know s'not from little Kaylee, Doc, so who's heart're you lookin' to break this time?" Jayne's large arm appeared over his shoulder and snatched the note from his hand in one smooth movement. There was a perfect moment of silence as Jayne read before he inhaled sharply through his nose.
"What…what?" Simon really couldn't manage much else.
"Uh, thanks Doc, but don't worry about the arm…I'm…ah…I'll be in my bunk." He moved quickly for such a big man, boots echoing up the back stairs as he very nearly ran for his room. Simon turned slowly and stared at the note now sitting askew on the exam table surface and blinked.
"What?"

There was something to be said about making love to a psychic.
She had meant to go slow, to let fingertips and lips linger over every pale hill and valley…to completely relax and comfort River before sexin' her up good and proper. But her bunk hatch was barely closed before nimble fingers were tugging at her coverall zipper and dangerous lips fastened to the soft skin under her chin.
"River, bao bei, wait-" she'd tried, honestly she'd tried to slow her down, tried to take the time to worship with hands and mouth and eyes but her dark haired love wouldn't be stayed.
"No…more…waiting," she mumbled between kisses, enjoying Kaylee's combined laugh and moan as she skimmed fabric from unresisting limbs. The moan turned into a sharp hiss as teeth gently scraped over the soft curve of breast before closing over her nipple through the fabric of her thin tank top. River appreciated the lack of restricting undergarments as she toyed expertly with the pebbled nub.
"I didn't…think you…knew…oh god," Kaylee trailed off, unable to finish the thought or the sentence. River grinned up from her bellybutton and tapped a finger against her own temple. She worked trembling limbs free from the folds of cloth in a heartbeat, warm breath ghosting against bared skin.
"Let me-" Kaylee started but River already knew, agreed wholeheartedly - grasped the hem of her gauzy dress in both hands and stripped herself of it in one smooth movement. Kaylee swallowed hard at the sight of smooth, pale skin and nothing else - her eyes caught the gauze from the bandage hesitated.
"Fine." River reassured, tingling warmly from the concern (so different from Simon's anxious paranoia, but definitely don't want to be thinking of Simon right now…) and from the concentrated gaze. Kaylee's waves of arousal and awe and joy were surrounding her in a thick, comforting layer that brought tears to her eyes. But then her hands found skin and most logical thought fled.
Kaylee's bunk had never seemed as huge as they crossed the floor to the bed locked together, both reeling from the first press of naked bodies. River hummed softly as Kaylee traveled a languid path around her neck, alternately nibbling and sucking, constantly surprising.
There was something to be said about making love to a mechanic.
Her hands, strong and nimble from countless hours of work on her (only) other girl, wandered seemingly everywhere at once, tickling in sensitive spots and scraping fingers over even more delicate areas. Her nerve endings were singing, becoming a din that drowned out all other until the entire world narrowed to this moment, this bed, and this woman.
"River, you-" Kaylee swallowed hard over the sudden thickness in her throat. "Wo ai ni." The brilliant smile wiped any doubts that may have been lurking in the darkest corners of her mind, leaving way for nothing but excitement and happiness.
" Wo de qing ren," River murmured against her lips, repeating it as dark tresses mingled with honey brown and kisses turned from languid to feverish. She explored warm skin as if trying to memorize, placing a gentle kiss on each limb before moving onto the next. Kaylee wondered if River had ever been intimate with anyone before, if she was maybe pushing or moving too fast, but then she was arching off the bed with nerve endings sparking around River's pleased grin.
"Oh…god, River…what…where…" Her questions dissolved into a meaningless tangle of syllables as River's wicked mouth vibrated against her…moving as though she had been lovin' Kaylee all of her life, knowing exactly what and where and how she needed. The twisting and nibbling and pressure, her hands still mapping their torturous paths along dewy skin… the keening became a helpless shriek, muffled into a clenched fist as her body dissolved into a boneless heap and bright white light burst behind her eyes.
River waited, shocked and awed at the beautiful sight of Kaylee falling apart before gathering her close to ride out the waves.
"I…I don’t know if I can do that." She whispered, for the first time unsure in loving arms.
"What, qing ren, why not?" Kaylee asked, brushing hair from her forehead and pulling her closer still.
"Fly into a million pieces, burn like the stars. I might not find my way back." A finger tipped her quivering chin up to Kaylee's eyes, huge with understanding and comfort and profound love.
"Just need somethin' to hold onto, bao bei. I promise to show you the way." Her lips found Rivers' and she suddenly didn't feel quite as afraid. "Don't care how long it takes; I'll always bring you back." She murmured against her lips, kissing her forehead and her nose and her neck and letting her tongue travel a moist path between the gentle curve of breasts, lingering on sensitive and silken skin.
River's mouth opened soundlessly, dazed and purring all at once, wondering how she'd gone through her entire life without this and thankful she hadn't experienced it with anyone but Kaylee and very gorram determined to fly apart into a million pieces, put them back together and then do it all over again.
It was all too much, too warm and too wet and too achingly wonderful and she worried for a moment that she was going to be lost (and that she would gladly go, if it meant she got to feel this way for even a short amount of time) - but then Kaylee's fingers were twining with hers, linking them wholly together and reminding body and mind where and when she was.
She clasped fingers tightly in her own, closed her eyes, and leapt.
She knew love would catch them.

By the third day Mal seriously considered knocking on the decorated door, or at the very least inquiring politely over the comm as to the approximate time until he got his two most respected and beloved and necessary crew members back. Zoe's threatening glance decided enough for him and he slumped back into the pilot seat in defeat. He mentally added a lecture about 'Respecting the Captain and His Sleep Schedule' to the long conversation they were all going to have when they finally did come out of there.
Simon was unexpectedly well with the situation, though he did have the tendency to drift off into a confused stare for moments at a time. He would blink owlishly and come back, puzzled and resigned twist to his features. He didn't dream of venturing into that bunk, knowing full well he'd only be tossed out of it - possibly seriously wounded.
No one saw much of Jayne, who only appeared in the mess hall once or twice a day to load up an armful of food before returning to his bunk. Mal didn't want to ask, he already knew the answer, he was already horrified by the man on good days let alone when crew were exhausting themselves in a locked bunk…but he couldn't quite help his eyebrows from rising on the last food run.
Surprisingly, the mercenary didn't laugh or make a lewd joke. Arms spilling with crackers and protein slices he shook his head at the Captain with genuine remorse.
"They're gonna kill me, Mal. Gonna gorram kill me." And then he was gone, moving quicker than the Captain had likely seen ever before.
"I can't know these things, I can't!"
fin.
