Notes: Heavily based on the song “Beautiful World” by the amazing Colin Hay. That entire song reminds me of the Firefly crew - mostly Wash and Mal. Here’s one vig. I may do more.

Zoë was a complete mystery to Wash. He had been nearly positive that she was going to push him out the airlock any moment. Then, he found her waiting for him in his bunk after his night shift. It was almost ridiculous now that he looked back on it. Her arms crossed over her chest, a hidden smirk behind that cold gaze. ‘Took your sweet time up there, didn’t ya?’ she had asked him, humor clear in her voice. He wondered how long he had stammered before she shoved him against the wall and kissed him. He discovered his senses come back mighty quick that way.

Moments ago, Wash was just plain happy. Happier than he thought he could be, and he had been pretty sure he’d reached his happiness-limit while flying. Sailing into the black could hardly compare to holding his warrior woman close. He liked how the phrase ‘his warrior woman’ sounded in his mind and could only imagine how it was aloud. Even if now, she wasn’t much of a mighty soldier.

Now she had left his arms, slipping back into her clothes. He had known it was coming. Zoë was through with him. Wash couldn’t seem to get angry over being used. He couldn’t help but say something as she turned away from him. “You all finished here, then?” he kicked himself inwardly for sounding like a gorram fool. She just gave him that sly smile.

“There’s somethin’ I should be stayin’ for?”

The grin came to his lips too easily. “I can think of a few reasons.”

“Well, I’ve a shift to cover and capt’n will get a mite cranky if I’m late.”

She started up the ladder, but something compelled him to speak up again. “What was it?” he asked. She stopped, ducking down to look at him. “Curious, is all. Did you fall for my stunning good looks or my charming wit?”

Another soft smirk. He doubted he was imaging that light glow around her. “Never said I fell in love with you pilot.” A pause to let his face fall a bit. “I do enjoy your company.”

Wash held in his glee as much as he could while she disappeared from his bunk. He imagined he didn’t do a great job at concealing it. Slowly, he laid back in his bed, arms stretched out in a lazy, content fashion. “Good ‘nough for me,” he murmured to himself. She was a gorram mystery, that woman. And it was the sexiest thing he’d ever seen.

My, my, my, it’s a beautiful world,
I like sleepin’ with Marie.
She is one sexy girl, full of mystery.
She says she doesn’t love me,
But she likes my company.
For now that’s good enough for me.
