No one has closed the challenge yet, so I can still post for it, right?

Final Fantasy: FFVIII

Character: Seifer

Rating: K

Word Count: 266

Notes/warnings: none

Summary: “It would have been expected of Seifer to go into hiding after the war, to retain what little pride he had left by living in obscurity in some little town”

It would have been expected of Seifer to go into hiding after the war, to retain what little pride he had left by living in obscurity in some little town. No one expected to hear from him. Perhaps he would turn up in some seedy bar somewhere, but that was all that anyone expected.

Everyone subconsciously knew, though, that that would be too clean of an ending to Seifer’s story. It would be too easy for Seifer to fall into an addiction to alcohol or some kind of drug while he was recovering from his ordeal with the sorceress. It was possible of course, and again, it was almost expected.

But that was one of the reasons that Seifer enjoyed seeing people’s reactions when he returned to Balamb Garden. Headmaster Cid had sent an invitation to Seifer to resume his studies at Garden, but it was mostly just a polite gesture. No one thought that Seifer would take up the offer.

There was speculation, but no one was certain why Seifer had returned. They said that perhaps he wanted to redeem himself, or just to prove that he could. Seifer, though, saw it almost as his duty. Maybe it was his duty to seek redemption, but either way, he felt bound by duty to at least try and reclaim the life that he once had and it was his duty to try to make up for all the pain that he caused.

Seifer had a simple strategy for succeeding in life after the war. He would continue to do what he did best, exceeding people’s expectations.
