Theme: Surrealism
I recently read Stephen King's
Duma Key over again lately, and the central motif in the story is the bizarre cathartic qualities of surrealistic art. In surrealism, objects are put together in strange ways or shown from odd perspectives, creating a whole image that doesn't seem to make rational sense, like in Dali's Persistence of Memory
here.
How do you do that on an icon? Well, flip a character on her head and leave the background right side up, or play other strange tricks with perspective. Or put conflicting effects together, such as in Max Ernst's Woman, Old Man, and Flower,
where the woman is painted but her arms are only sketched in -
here's a neat tutorial on a similar effect. Or you could put seemingly random objects in bizarre spots, as in Magritte's The Son of Man,
where an apple covers the subject's face. Like those damn bird icons, or the new crossword patches or eye charts growing out of the subject's head.
Be creative, and I'm sure you could come up with lots of surrealistic ideas!
